I just got tricked into installing malware on my windows system by the advertisement at the top of the tortoisesvn.net home page. This *looks* just like the download link, but it leads you into places you don't really want to go.

One system restore later, it looks as though I have most things up and running again...

Hi Philip,

I'm sorry you've had this experience. However. the ads are something
which have been discussed at length on this mailing list and the
bottom line is that we need them in order to keep the project going.
The reasons are outlined in the FAQ here:

http://tortoisesvn.net/faq.html#ads

As you will notice if you look on the page, the ads are surrounded
with a border marked "Advertisement", so although their designers try
to make them look like mouse magnets, we have also tried to mark out
what they are. You will find the same sort of advertising on
SourceForge itself when you click on our real download link.
Unfortunately it's the way the internet is right now.

Exactly what is advertised is selected by google, so if what you
unintentionally installed was malware then you can report this to
google. as the advertiser would be in breach of their terms of
service. Unfortunately I can't do that for you as the ads depend on
location and google history.

They aren't. There is only a (border) line at the top and left, but not at the right or bottom.
Just FYI.
(checked with all major browsers, on two PCs)

I've just checked with Chrome, Firefox & IE on both XP & Win7 (Chrome
only on 7), and in all 5 cases I do see the border, icon on the ad
itself, and the "Advertisement" label (example attached).

Or are we arguing over whether all 4 sides are bordered vs. just two?
In which case, as long as the label "Advertisement" is still there,
isn't the message clear?

There is a border on the right & bottom but its colour is set to
white. Changed it to be lighter than the other sides but not pure
white in r23142. There's not much point in turning the border on but
making it invisible.
