Hey all,

Was wondering if I could get some advice from you all. I am looking
to get my first non-free web host, and I want to make sure I am
getting a good product and not some scam artist.

Here are my requirements: I want to be able to host more than one
website from the host (that is, have multiple domain names pointing to
different directories on the host). Space is not a huge issue--
nothing I'll be putting up there will be terribly big. I want the
ability to install things like Wordpress, Joomla, and other CMS's
easily.

This will be used for my own professional website, a blog or two, and
a website for my small business.

I would appreciate any advice you could give me! You can't really
trust the results in google for "best web hosts" because they could
very well be owned by the one they call the best. On that note, is
there somewhere out there a good independent site rating web hosts?

Thanks so much!

Rob

I use Rochen for my hosting.  I'm very happy with them.  They host all the Joomla! sites, so that tells you something right there.  Brad Baker, who is one of their support guys, is on the Joomla! core team.  I've found them to be very professional and very responsive, and reasonably priced as well.  I think Alan, who is on this list as well, does hosting also.  He also knows what he is doing and will give you good service.

I have experience with 1and1.com (Joomla! and WP multiple domains and multiple clients using) and netfirms Joomla!). I have not had issues with either one.

The best web host sites are typically paid for inclusion sites. That is why you tend not to see some of the larger hosts listed.

Good luck,

Rob:

As someone who provides hosting services to clients, I can say that
reliable information is hard to find. One of the reasons why we got
into hosting is because of frustration with other companies. You do
your research, find someone with good customer feedback, and sign
up... only to discover that so many others have done the same thing
that they can't grow to handle the load. Or you find a bigger
provider, assuming that they have things right, and wind up calling
them five times a year to tell them that their server is down or that
their network is slow. Even if you find someone you're happy with,
they can wind up being acquired by someone else who "trims the fat"
and leaves you with everything you worked so hard to avoid.

On the flip side you have users who want first class reliable hosting
with no overselling, nanosecond response times and great support for
five bucks a month... which is mathematically impossible.

All I can suggest is that you talk to as many people as you can find
who have the same sorts of needs that you do (traffic, responsiveness,
price point, etc.) and see if a common recommendation emerges.

Regards,

Alan

I recently switched from Siteground, who had an amazing price and
mediocre service, to Ninja hosting at

http://ninjahostinghq.com/

These guys know Joomla inside and out, support is fantastic, you get
some great deals on extensions and templates WITH your hosting, and
the prices are competitive. I'd recommend them full heartedly. Hope
that helps.
