John,
I recently reworked the windows in my 30' and found out it is VERY important to get the proper thickness of gasket material when re installing the window and frame.
The gasket material which I and referring to is the outside (boat to window frame), because of the channel which the screws go into.
If the gasket is to thick, the screws will not seat. If it is to thin, they will bottom out and will not properly seat as well.
I, lets say, found it out the hard way having to try out various gasket materials, grinding down the length of the screws and also squeezing the channel to tighten the screw to draw up the window to properly seat and keep the water out.
Squeezing the channel slightly, after finding the proper thickness of gasket was the best way to draw the window frame tight.

John, what material are you referring to?  I'm in the process of re-doing my windows on an '88 30-ft tolly and all I'm using to put them in is 3M 4200 UV fast cure with a v-notch caulk tube.  Am I missing something?  Roy

Hi Roy,
I needed to replace the u channel felt material and in order to do that, I needed to remove the complete window and frame.
Following the replacement of the u channel, and in reinstalling the window into the boat, a closed cell foam gasket was needed to properly seal between the window frame and the out side of the boat.
If the gasket is to thin the screws will bottom out and you can not draw the window frame tight enough to the boat to properly seal it and of course the reverse is true if it is overly thick.
In the past I have used 4200 and if you ever need to remove the item glued, you can have a real challenge in doing so.
I can not remember the thickness of the foam gasket but I would get some small samples and find out which one will let you draw the window tight without bottoming out the screws.
I found some gasket material in the garage and one is 1/2 " wide and 3/16 " thick. The other is 1 1/4 " wide, I think it is to wide, and 1/4 " thick. I think I used the thicker material because I can squeeze the frame into the opening better than bottoming out the screws.
Squeezing the screw channel is also a challenge because you do not want to strip the phillips head insert, I used, right or wrong, a ratchet with a phillips head socket to get the screws tight enough.
So far I have no leaks around the windows.

The next challenge will be to replace the gasket material around the front windows due the the gasket pulling away from the corners on the bottom of the window.

This has been my experience and if anyone has tried something different, please let me know. I would like to find someone from the factory who did the window installations  the way they did it originally

Hello John and Roy:

If you are interested, there are several informative articles with photos located at http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/boat_projects. The qualities of marine grade butyl tape are being demonstrated. I too need to re-seal windows and some other cabin structure joints on a 24 ft Tolly Express Cruiser and have purchased butyl tape for the job instead of closed cell foam. Time, of course will tell all. If the link doesn't work you could also Google "Compass Marine".

Cheers,

Bill

Roy my boat is a 34 sundeck. It has a sliding window on each side. attached to the glass is a metal part that you hold on to and push the window open. the port side one came off and I can get it to reattach to the the glass.

John, I replaced my gaskets on the front windows of my 34 ft sundeck and found if I heated the gaskets before installing them I was able to get them to go around the corners better. I actually used a heated pizza delivery bag to heat them. I guess you could use a heating pad or maybe real hot water.
