It never occurred to me to install blow-off valve on a PET bottle, nice!
Otherwise I regularly make carbonated stuff this way (juice or just
water) but using analog sensors and actuators - my hands to open the
cap a bit when I feel the bottle is about to burst.

So far no accidents, but I have been worrying lately due to the sheer
number of successfully completed tries...

Anyone know a good source of small, cheap, possibly regulated blow-off valves??

Cheers,
Kalin.

I used this method in Turkey, after getting some special ice cream home, with the packing dry ice. Never had an accident but it was possible and I stopped doing it.

Maybe the industrial automation shops have them. If not, we can arrange a group order.

hmm no cheap steam cookers in 100 yen shops to harvest a valve from those?
or those cheap (and dangerous) espresso cookers to place direct on a hot plate.

By the way, we can force carbonate with the equipment available to the hackerspace.  Insert the fluid (or other material) into the keg, pressurize to 30 psi with the CO2 can we have.  Shake the shit out of the keg and voila, carbonated whatever.  Colder liquids absorb CO2 more readily.

Extraordinarily drunk.

Just need to point this out.  I am in full support of a hacker drink.  I suggest investigating

Yerba mate is a social drink.  I hope you guys take to it.

No pressure cookers in 100yen shops, I've looked thoroughly for years ;-)
I found one almost new in the gomi though (for free).

Pressure cookers have two valves - normal (usually spinning) - weight
on a narrow metal pipe and emergency (usually a spring loaded ball).
If we calculate (and measure) the proper weight we can get a cheap
valve; varying the weight will produce different pressures.

LoL, I decided to check now Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pressure_cooker#Safety_features

> or those cheap (and dangerous) espresso cookers to place direct on a hot plate.

Those are really not dangerous (AFAIK) and yes they usually do have a
spring loaded ball for blow-off. Next time I see one in the gomi
(never saw one for the last 15 years) - will take the valve.

I guess these are good for +1 atm (101 kPa above ambient pressure)?
http://www.coffeecompany.com.au/accessories/espresso-pots-stovetop-espresso_2/stainless-steel-safety-valve/

The Net suggests 2l PETs hold 200 psi (13 atm)...

That site rocks: http://www.fizzgiz.com/index.htm

Cheers,
Kalin.

Yep, just checked out Fizz Giz, gave me some ideas. It says although they can hold up to 200 psi, they are pressurized to 55 psi which is about 3.7 atm

And Garrett, that was the drink I had in mind for first trial! :) Then we can change the ingredients, change the taste a little bit.

Hmmm, first of all they can get as hot as the hot plate. Very
dificulte to handle then. Secondly, at least in Germany there were
known to explode from time to time (most likely because of misuse). It
wouldn't kill you but makes the kitchen a mess...

Most probably the problem is that they are not made in Germany. Otherwise they would be really sturdy, weight a ton and can cope with a 105 mm artillery shell.

I just love German engineering :)

The simplest safety relief device for PET bottle is an aluminum cap. The molded plastic closures like you find on all bottles in Japan these days will hold more pressure than the bottle. But the thin metal caps that are still found on glass containers (especially energy drinks) will fit a PET bottle and will deform and leak well before a bottle reaches it burst point. Provided of course that the bottle isn't severely scratched or defective.

We are looking fine on my side. Will be able to make a demo. For installing we need the servo mount (MRE was working on it) and some cards.

I thought someone was setting up his closet for...

Anyway, even *I* know you don't measure MJ in gallons. What kind of
European country are you from?

I'm pretty sure Kimono could score us a 5 gallon pot.

From a very strange one. We are considered in Europe, Asia and sometimes Middle East, go figure!

Maybe it is better to do a small batch first, then move to bigger ones. Also we have to find a source for Mate. I found some in Amazon.com but local is better. Max I was able to find in Amazon.co.jp was about 100 gr.

It shouldn't be too difficult to find a used large pot (10 to 20L) at Tenpos
used restaurant supply.
