I have the feeling that data and privacy security is not a real topic
in Japan...
Just three examples from many situations I encountered...

1) Open a bank account:
Staff: "So Wagner san, please write down your 4 digit security pin
number and give it to me so I can add it to the computer system"
Me looked very puzzled
2) Send in a defect PC:
Me: I want to remove the HDD,
Service: Why you want to do that?
Me: Because, all my data is on it?!
Service: But without HDD we can't start the system to test it.
Me: Use a CD, USB stick, or another HDD (beside a cracked screen does
not need Windows to test it ;) )?
Service: Sorry we require to boot Windows to test the system, you have
to send it with the HDD in. (Acutally, I believe they wanted to start
the hidden partition rescue/recovery system)
Me: There is no Windows or anything else on the machine
Service: What do you mean no Windows
Me: No it runs Linux only, I deleted all and everything which comes with it...
Service: Ohhh wait a second... (escalate along the competency
hierarchy).... in that case you might remove the HDD

Send in claim for travel expenses:
Accountant: We need the statement of your VISA card payment
Me: I have here the monthly balance print out to show you the specific
transaction
Accountant: I go and make a copy
Me: Could you please blank all unrelated parts!
Accountant: Why?

So yeah compared to other countries there is still not that much of an
feeling of data protection and privacy

lol, the windows part especially...

at the same time privacy is my main concern... I am old fashioned though.

entertainment is a among luxuries and shouldn't be necessarily free.
I think that if The Rolling Stones decided to use their artistic gift to get filthy rich with the help of mayor music labels... well, it is their right.
Other bands decide to self produce themselves to have control and the ability to follow different marketing strategies, where content is available online for free.
Big guys like Beastie Boys also had some of their content online for everybody to download.

IMO
Downloading Tb of copyrighted music internet might be excused in many ways, but in the end is only a selfish act of greediness.
Watching a few music videos on youtube or playing the radio on grooveshark is a silly act.
both, shouldn't be punished with 2 year jail(?!?!) and life threatening fines.
nor doing the above should justify being spied.

I just send a Toshiba laptop with dying CPU fan to their support,
about an hour ago!
Of course I removed the SSD and put a sticker "No SSD inside" ;-)

Hope it flies. One can hear the fan even in BIOS screen :-)

Laptop is back, changed fan for free (had 3 year warranty).
There was a note "Since you had removed the SSD, we did only "Standard
testing" on the PC" :-)

Cheers,
Kalin.
