Hi there, I need to send some of my stuff that i acquired here in Nihon home as a parcel - and I need a huuuge cardboard box (imagine a 42" flatscreen TV) for it - do you think just asking at one of the big consumer electronics chains might work out or will they freeze in shock when I ask sth like that?

I would say the will burst out in heavy action asking supervisors,
which will ask supersupervisors, which in turn ask
supersupersupervisors... finally you will face half a dozen of stuff
running around like ants and eventually, after many many more minutes
of waiting someone will tell you it is not working or they will pop up
with a box for you.

However, just let me ask, what kind of sending option do you plane to
choose. Looking for myself to get stuff (economically) back home. I
checked a bit, all I found is rather insane expensive. to the point
that the value of the goods is lower then the shipping costs.

If you can do it in a bunch of smaller boxes it will be:

1: Cheaper overall
2: MUCH easier to get boxes.

AS for 2..  I routinely get small and medium boxes from any grocery store with absolutely no trouble at all.. at worst they say things like "Come to the back of the store tomorrow between 3 and 5.. its when we put them out."

As for 1: I once had to ship a box that large, full of security cameras, to Russia (dont ask.. strange job I used to have), from Yokohama. It cost nearly 1000 USD.

1000 USD for the box or the shipping? I can send it for 10000 yen according to the JP website.

I have found out htat it costds the same to take my personal effects as additional luggage on the airplane, so that is what I want to do. Question: do you know where I can get such extremely big hardcase suitcase? It need to exceed 70 by 50 by 28 cm in it inner dimensions as I have a bulky item to take home.

Is this still within the usual luggage range for airlines?!

Frankly spoken, if whatever you transport has no sentimental value for
you, you might consider selling it and get a new one back home... the
price difference might be less compared to the shipping cost. Plus you
get new warranty in your home country and proper language/regional
settings (if there are any).

Just an idea

You could try around Ueno, there a a bunch of stalls that sell cheap luggage there.
If you're looking for something more solid/expensive the usual suspects Marui etc.

It is about a 30 inch LCD screen. No way I can get anything like it for the symbolic price I paid here. It is cosmetically damaged so am quite lucky. It would fit inside one big suitcase. And BTW: how is it different form my laptop? THey can check for narcotics if they want, there are none inside :D

Well, that is a bit hard to find case... You'll need one of the
biggest Pelicans, 1780 should fit.
http://pelican.com/cases_detail.php?Case=1780

Just don't forget it weighs 25kg and cost probably $700.

Kalin.

I was in Nara during the weekend - when you proceed uphill along the main shopping promenade you will find several small streets to the left. One of them had a big shop selling just bags and they were all dirt cheap. I will try to find it on googlestreetview.

I am quite sure it was in Sakura dori.

heh.. perhaps I failed to mention that we were sending 100 units... The box was bigger than a, and weighed well over 50 pounds.
Imagine sending your big screen tube TV across the world.
