Hi all,

Following the example of the Akihabara Tour, I'm working with a friend
of mine on a tour of Tokyu Hands in Shibuya.

If you've been there and found something really cool, let me know and
we can feature it in the tour.

Is the one at Shibuya much bigger than the Shinjuku one?  I found the Shinjuku one very easy to get to from the train station and a rather clean 3 floor layout.  Contrasting with the Ikebukuro one which is slightly trickier to get to and slightly messier layout.

The Shinjuku one is also excellent for guys with girlfriend/wife as you can leave them to shop downstairs :)

Make sure you ask some staff for permission (good luck), or do it
covertly (not recommended).

Hi,

not intended to hijack the thread, however, how about a 100 Yen Shop
tour as well. Daiso and Co sell stuff which is very hacker friendly,
price and material alike.
Just think of all this cheap plastic boxes which makes nice project
enclosures and for a few hundred Yen you do not mind to drill holes
inside, etc.
There are 1 Euro stores in Europe and 1$ stores in US. But I never
found such a wide variety of not-to-bad quality stuff in those. E.g.
in Germany those shops usually sell what they can get cheap at that
time. They do usually not have a fixed stock of product as they have
here in Japan.

What? They only had 6 corners full of Christmas! That's not gonna
move, right? :P

The Shibuya Tokyu Hands was their first store, and is 9 stories
arranged in a helix.
It's not too easy to find from the station, but big and has a lot of
stuff to video.
I don't believe I've been to the Hands in Shinjuku, so I couldn't
really say, but I believe the Shibuya store is bigger than
Ikebukuro's.

We didn't ask ("always ask for forgiveness instead"), but even though
we weren't very sneaky about it nobody said anything about our
filming. However, we only did 4 floors or so in the two hours we were
there, so maybe they'll get angry next time.

Seems like something like this could be done with still photos better
than a video guide. But then I'm mostly against video on the Internet
anyway. Maybe you could get a start in Sendai by snapping shots of
your favorite Daiso hackables?

As with most projects in the hackerspace, it just takes the will to
start. We've been talking about a Nippori textile guide as well. I
suppose it would be worth trying to collect these videos into a single
channel someday.
