Subject: Kit Posters

I still have a copy of the Atari Punk Console poster from last year, and
have created posters for items on the Google spreadsheet for:

LOL White
LOL Blue
LOL plus Arduino Clone
Lanterns Bulk
Open Heart
Diavolino
FTDI
TV B Gone
TV B Gone SIGNED! BY MITCH!
12V USB Charger
THS Badge

They are in PPT format.

Deal with that.

If anyone can explain how to upload them to google docs (single syllable
words are best) I'll do so.

Or, If anyone wants me to mail copies, I can do that.

Or, if it is OK, I can just mail a zip file to this list.

Are these all "For sale" items through "THS"?

as I would like to know more...

if you can open drive.google.com and use the upload button once you  sign

you should be able to share the ppt from there

Nicely done!

A few points:
* Something weird happens with the prices. It shows up like "\2000" I
assume this is the yen kanji conversion issue? Is it fine on your end?
* I will try to post related photos from the respective sites this week.
* Do we have room for Japanese as well?
* Id be interested in the raw files (or at least PDF) so that I can put
together a slideshow. It still have dreams of hacking one of the old iBooks.

The backslash/yen sign is a JIS standard issue that isn't related to
kanji. It would work better if
1) we used kanji, either the yen sign 円 or the full-width yen mark ¥
2) we just hand-drew it in.

> * I will try to post related photos from the respective sites this week.

I was thinking again that this would be easily hand-written on the
signs after they're printed.
Jud, did you talk to Otoshi-san about writing Japanese copy?

I like the QR code addition. :)

If you are going to display all of them as a poster wall e.g., behind the
table,  you might could attach a real sample on each poster.  Esp. for the
kits with some blinking stuff that would create a real eye catcher.
For this it would be best to glue the posters on some foam boards allowing
to stick a pcb board to it too and drill some holes for power cables etc.

They are kits that we have for sale at the space. If you're interested
in purchasing any, you can let me know or ask on the list.

We'll be selling the kits at the Maker Faire in December. An inventory

I have attached the PDF of the Atari Punk Console kit.

Please view it, to see if the yen mark is correct.  If so, I'll PDF the
other posters for review. In any case, except for the Atari Punk Console
sheet, I'll probably just print straight from PowerPoint, to sidestep the
Yen mark issue.

Does anyone know where the sample Atari Punk Console is? We could stick it
on the poster.

I costed lamination.  250 yen per A3, so 2250 so far.

Will these be hung from the table cage?  or should we make stands for the
posters?

I have some spare 100 yen shop wire meshes that might be useful on the
cage.  But might not look cool.

Could anyone translate the posters into Japanese?

I'll work on updating the graphics, and on finally writing my "Intro to
THS" text.

Jud

It's in our "cool samples" box, the clear plastic container on the

Just as a side-note:

I guess the secret for the Yen mark and PDF is to embed whatever font you
using into the PDF, otherwise the font gets silently replaced by a similar
installed font, which might or might not contain the Yen character in the
font set.
This is a rather well known problem for submitting camera-ready manuscripts
to journals and conferences.
The solution is to always embed the font. Your PDF generator should have
this as an option.
Some printer drivers have a similar mechanism. In that case you want to
tell the printer to print graphically and to not replace fonts by printer
system fonts.

I just uploaded a new version of the APC poster, with MRE's suggested new
graphics.

Dunno.  Maybe too busy.

If we translate the posters into Japanese (which I think is common sense,
since we are in Japan), maybe we could translate the "Can I borrow a cup of
Robots" into colloquial Japanese.

Questions Still Open:

Will these posters be hung from the table cage?

Or, should we make stands for the posters?

Are my 100 yen store wire meshes (white steel wire, approx 3cm (METRIC!)
between wires, desired for use on the cage?

Anyone willing to translate the posters into Japanese?

Best,

Jud

Yup it does.

Make sure you safe it in exact the size your are going to print it, to
avoid quality loose due to up-scaling. Many of the stuff in a PDF is vector
based, that would scale well up and down. However, if you add graphics and
you designed it lets say to be A4 and later print it A0, all your images
look pixelated and blurry... If you want them A0, create them A0, scaling a
larger size down to get e.g., A4 hand-outs, is not that big issue.

If you want go 100% safe, carry a set of files as PNG with you to the
printer.  No compression artifacts and being pure graphic, there is little
chance that the printer or anything in between can mess things up. However,
they might be large and the printer has munch a lot of data slowing down
the printing process.

Wire mesh: short answer yes. Long answer: next week kalin will bring the parts, and we will know more about sizing and how many we need.

Ill try to buy a bag of hooks and pegs for it this weekend.

Btw, set up some rack in my work zone at home. Very happy with it.

Posters will go on towers, table and wherever. So, id say a4 size is fine. Ill bring a hole punch so we can hang on the rack or tie with string, or  float with balloons.

Hi,

Dead busy and no prospects of getting any better; flying to HKG on
Monday, back - on Friday.

>> Wire mesh: short answer yes. Long answer: next week kalin will bring the

I checked the pipe/parts at home, I have enough pipe (6.5m) and most
of the connectors, will need to buy a few more at my local D2.
However I am really desperate for time and not sure when will I be
able to bring the stuff to THS.

Anyone with a car that can fit 130cm pipes willing to transport it? I
can arrange someone to be at home most any time this/next week.
Alternatively, I can test/build something myself and bring it directly
to Make on Saturday.

I am pretty confident we can hack it in place, no need for pre-flight test.

Kalin.

Subject: Re: [THS:21304] Kit Posters

The test was basically successful.  I printed out the PDF and PPT versions
of the 12V DC Charger poster.

The Yen symbol printed correctly from both file types.
The graphics at the bottom of the page looked fine.
For some reason, the text on one version used a slightly different font
size, or the graphics were handled a little differently.  Text on one was

Only
¥2000

Whereas on the other the text came out

Only
¥200
0

I'll fix that.

The posters are currently sized A3, but of course I (or anyone, really)
could print them A4.

Note:  test conducted in greyscale.

Regarding lamination, my options are:

1. No lamination, no nothing.  Use tape or wire or resistors to stabilize.

2. Glue the posters to a backing material.  Either needs backing material
that does not deform by absorbing water, or needs non-water adhesive.

3.  Lamination at Kinkos. Again,

4.  I'll mail or hand-deliver, on Tuesday at the Hackerspace, posters to
Lauren.

5.  The lamination machine visits the Hackerspace next Tuesday.

6.  Lauren or somebody else with a laminator prints and laminates the
posters.  This takes advantage of the modern wizardry of innertubes. There
is a website that esplains this majic.

Questions that remain not fully answered:

0.  Anyone willing to translate the posters into Japanese?

1.  Will these posters be hung from the table cage?

Is there a diagram of the cage, or a set of dimensions?

2.  Or, should we make stands for the posters?

Or we could tape them hanging from the table.  Not optimal for visibility.

3.  Are my 100 yen store wire meshes (white steel wire, approx 3cm
(METRIC!) between wires, desired for use on the cage?

I'll try to remember to bring the wire mesh to the space.

MRE, all posters are now in PDF format and available at the drive.google.com,
so as to for enable the constructionment of your show of slides.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Kalin,

Ok.
Only question:
Can you give us a good idea of the distance between the two front facing
vertical pipes, and the height.
We will need some idea of how big the wire mesh needs to be.
From that, we can buy all the other stuff, and join forces there at MAKE.

We can pretty much make it any size with the pipe cutter ;-)

Using the angle (HJ-2), the outside size of the angle will be (35+16.5
+ pipe1) x  (35+16.5 + pipe2), assuming pipe1=pipe2=250 (about half
the table depth), we'll have a triangle with about 1.4*300 or 420 x
300 x 300. If we assume 600 for height of the frame, then you'll need
a mesh of about 420x600 (x2 pieces).

That said, it will be easier to mount with tie-wraps if the mesh is
slightly bigger than the frame.

I guess, just buy 2 or 3 mesh plates of about 40-50cm x 50-65cm and
we'll make the frame to fit.
Send me the exact distance between the end rods of the narrow side
(inside), so I can try to per-calculate the pipe sizes.

We'll need also hooks (or wire wraps) and tie-wraps (for some reason I
have mostly black at home, I guess white will be better) and may be
some clamps (I just tried the 110mm ones I have and they actually work
very good, so just bring the ones we have at THS (orange/black)) and
some anti-slip mat works wonders (I'll bring).

Kalin.
