I recently heard about Tokyo HackerSpace at the New Context Conference, and wanted to reach out.
My teammates and I are developing device-based social network that uses living plants in its user interface. We created a musical instrument / game around the idea for this year's TEDxTokyo.
We are now thinking about a simple DIY plant sensor and messenger kit. Basically, you can turn your house plant into a character by recording your own voices and messages that are played when the plant needs water sunlight etc. I'm very interested in the potential of doing this as an open hardware development project, and was wondering if this is something that might be interesting for Tokyo HackerSpace. I will come to the meeting on Tues. Emery suggested I also post here.
I thought this might make a good workshop, but it I want to talk to the THS members to hear what the best options would be.
Yes, that's quite possible. I'd recommend using an Arduino and the APR9600
audio recorder/playback IC. The APR9600 can record up to 60 seconds of
messages and can store up to 8 different messages. You can trigger the
different messages via the Arduino based on whatever sensor inputs you are
using. You can get the IC in Akihabara at Akizuki.

I want to add plant can be much more rather then the green around a sensor.
They have there own signaling and with a bit of electronic you can
interface this. Breaking a leaf or hurting the plant in a way creates
strong action potentials.
Back in Germany I was discussing and thinking with a biologist how to tap
this signals for something good.
CC. Don't slash the Arduino-hammer on it too fast. The MSP430 as a
ultra-low power uC would run from creating an "earth-battery" inside the
plants flowerpot no need for a external powersource. Also powerful enough
to to some low-level speech-synthesis on board. Guess everthing in quality
which sounds like Mickey Mouse is ok.

I am interested in playing with the msp430 as well. I have a few dev kits to try out. Super low power and all that. Potato battery should last a week ;)

Plants as sensors and self-generated power are both things I'm very interested in. I also wondered if this kind of water powered battery could be made into the bottom of the flower pot so the excess water could be an energy source. http://waterbattery.com/
We just tested a super simple two plant messaging system at the Zushi Media Art Festival. I think the next step for us is incorporating the water, light, etc sensors into the mix. Eventually we want the plants to communicate wirelessly.

Chris,
Have you thought about infrared video tracking? You can, at the very least
see where they are coming into your fields from, would greatly help
trapping.
