Hi all,

I'm a hacker/maker/engineer from the UK, and I'm visiting Tokyo for a
few days. Arrived this afternoon.

May I please drop by and visit the space? I always like to check out
the hacker scene when I'm in a new city. Would be good to hang out
with some fellow geeks, get some Akihabara tips, etc.

I'm also aiming to check into a capsule hotel tonight (cheap and
unique). Late I know, but if somebody can recommend one please give me
a shout! I'm currently lurking in an internet cafe in Akihabara
struggling with Japanese google maps ;-).

Cheers,
Jeff

Well, I think the internet cafe*s will let you spend the night.  Some even have showers.  I'm afraid I don't know of any capsule hotels though.

Unfortunately, or normal tuesday night meeting is being moved this
week to outdoors, in order to enjoy the cherry blossoms. You are
welcome to come. It is in Akihabara:

To visit the space, I am usually here, and can give a tour, but it
might be boring with just me to talk to ;)
So, I hope other members will be willing to arrange a date to come
over and hang out with you.
At any rate, I am here after 430 on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. I
am also here at various times throughout the weekend.

Just choose some dates and times which work for you, let me know, and
I will tell you when is good for me.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but we're from the St. Louis, USA
hackerspace Arch Reactor and would love to stop by the space tomorrow
(Monday). If you're going to be there from 4:30, we could come by
around 7 and still catch the 9:30 shinkansen back to our host family.
Please let us know if that's okay. We're excited to meet you and check
out the THS.

Probably too late, but replying anyway.

Asakusa is pretty easy to get to from Akihabara, has a lot of shifty hotels, and isn't as noisy as Shinjuku et al at night (late night active guests being one of the main sleep-disturbers at capsule hotels).  Don't miss the public baths - they're half the fun.  (Just don't get soap in the baths!  Scrub/shower first, then soak, and you won't tick off the natives.)

No lodging is truly cheap in tokyo though -- even a capsule hotel will probably run you 4000 yen (or more).  :(

struggling with Japanese google maps ;-).

Try adding ?hl=en (or &hl=en if there's already other variables defined) to the end of your google maps URL in the net cafe?  (Might work?)  E.g. change http://maps.google.co.jp/?hl=ja to http://maps.google.co.jp/?hl=en

Also bumping Garrett's comment on spending the night in net cafes.  Have done that a lot more often than capsules, and what you lose out on in comfortable sleeping gear, you gain in quiet, internet access, and endless slushies and shitty coffee.  (Plus it's just as unique an experience -- try both!  Become an expert!)

Thanks for all your accommodation tips; I've been staying in a mix of hostels, capsule hotels, internet cafes, and friends' houses. The internet café in Osaka was very comfortable and extremely cheap!

Sorry I never made it last week; I'm going to come along tonight if that's ok. It's at the Shirokanedai address, right?

Cheers
Jeff

Yes, it's in Shirokanedai.
 5-11-11 Shirokanedai Minato-ku 108-0071
You can reach it easiest from the Shirokanedai station on the Mita or Nanboku lines, if you're using JR it's not a far walk from Meguro station.
