I have an idea how it would be technically possible to keep more than
one sessions open in the same browser.

1. Name sessions (and thus, cookies) based on the login name, or some
derivative.
My idea is to use <accountname>.gmail.com / <accountname>.*.google.com
as host name. Again, <accountname> may be a derivative, e.g. internal
id (1234567) or a random id generated upon login (234214adsfasf2414).
The latter would remain valid until next login with the same account.

2. Provide "log in with another account in parallel" in addition to
"log out"

3. Provide means to specify "main" account.

Advantages:
- separate windows/tabs for separate accounts
- separate label sets
- no need to fiddle with From: address / POP / etc.

Disatvantage:
- may leak valid gmail account names in network packets (unless hard-
to-decode derivatives are used above).
- I don't know if it would be possible DNS/http-wise
- problematic in the rest of google apps (i.e.must somehow define the
"main" account)
