Implementing the TI-Nspire

spread out in 2009-10. When you buy 7500 handhelds.....The first three
days were with the click pad and 1.7 OS. The last two days were OS 2.0
and touchpad. You can just imagine that when I had to tell them the
Springthat the OS was changing and the clickpad was going away, the
fear I felt of a revolt. My fears were unfounded. They LOVED the 2.0
OS, liked the touchpad and were more than willing to change the OS's
on all those handhelds. What I am doing for my reluctant teachers is
to emphasize that if they can download the pre-built activities from
TI-Nspire websites, turn it on and turn the pages, then are ready to
get started. This has seemed to be very successful technique. I have
also put together with some others in my district a training called TI-
Nspire 101 which goes over the very, very basics. While the TI
trainers are wonderful sometimes they know too much and it just goes
over teachers heads reinforcing the fear. Their definition of basics
is not a reluctant teachers definition. All is not perfect, but I
really think I have made progress.

Did your district provide professional development money, too? While
Travis's suggestions are all great, they won't work with those
reluctant teachers. I would suggest contacting taking a look at the
professional development page of the TI website. They have a lot of
options to help you organize training for your staff. Without the PD,
I suspect that only a small fraction of the 60 geometry teachers will
take their own time to learn how to use the TI-Nspire in a rich way.
Even with training and experience, it will take more than a year to
transition away from the TI-84.

It sounds like you're on your way! I might direct those reluctant
teachers toward the online courses that TI offers for free. They can
work in privacy (or even in a small group), at their own pace, and on
what they want. Sometimes that's better than having an expert trying
to teach you. Also, are you planning to have a Users Group or some
other type of monthly support system? Just a thought ...
