Subject: EJAMMING via Seattle
I am in a band over in Seattle called Beast, Please Be Still and we
are coming out of our hiatus pretty  much willing to reinvent
ourselves. At least, that's how I see it. Just this Saturday we
decided to do a completely improvized set(see this:
http://www.boontdusties.com/journal/2009/01/25/beast-please-be-still-...")

So here is the basic thought about using different Time Travel Clubs -
we could have a ritual where multiple musical incarnation of Time
Travel Club perform at the same time in different places.

I was discussing this with the EWI (electronic wind instrument) / Sax
player trying to think of some ways to include the Seattle chapter. He
mentioned some software for playing with people over the internet.
He's a free program for instance: http://www.ejamming.com/

So I thought we could use something like ejamming to all play
together. Maybe set up a show where we are both playing at around the
same time (adjusted for time differences), and then at a certain
moment we CROSS THE STREAMS.  We have a video projector over here
(don't know if you guys can get one) but thought it might be fun to
setup a webcam at some point in the middle of the music, combine the
audio streams, and then do some performance aspect w/ the live video
to give the illusion of OPENING THE STARGATE to alternate time travel
clubs operating in different cities! HOLY SHIT.

I played around with ejamming for a while.  I sat in a room all alone,
then this guy just dropped in and started playing the bass, I played
sax.   It has kind of difficult since the system needs to add some
latency to account for the temporal variability of information
traveling across the tubes.    But it was fun playing with a total
stranger from PA.

Supposedly one can get used to playing along with the group and take
into account the latency.  we should try it!   I had to spend a little
bit of time beating on my Windows XP install, and then configuring my
firewall to get it going.  If you want to set it up and try it out,
let me know and maybe I can provide technical assistance, and we can
help each other play with it.

I think there are other apps which can do a similar thing, know of
any?

This sounds really cool. I had a conversation about this with somebody
from Portland over email I think a while back. Will try to get him
involved in the conversation...

Off to buy myself a soldering station so I can start messing with
homebrew electronics!

Hey What's up Garrett, this is Luke in Olympia. This thing is really
interesting to me, the distance sound thing. I'm a musician and
programmer, so it combines what I'm interested in.

So obviously the latency is an issue. The interesting idea is what you
can do with that. For instance, from the ritual perspective, its easy
to synch...maybe a bass and drumline, prerecorded, at many different
locations. Performers can hear each other, with latency, but stay on a
unified beat, etc. This keeps the actions TRULY synchronized. Then on
the other hand you have the idea of using the latency as a tool in the
music, bringing it in and having this sort of - relativistic -
performance, where exactly what it is depends on where you are
listening from. And then of course you can throw out the idea of a
single time scale at all, and work in terms of things like "packet
based" compositions, where each musician responds, like a server, to
the last musical packet sent his way... ;)

Anyway, brainstorming wildly here. Look forward to helping out here as
I can.
