Subject: Confiscated ID card

Has anyone experienced this:  My nephew's ID card was taken ONE MONTH AGO by
a staff member (Vasquez) of Beto Unit.  He was not told why it was taken on
July 4, and his grievance was not returned yet, more than a month.  I spoke
with the warden 3 days after the card was taken, and was told that the
staff  can take a card if it needs to be replaced. My nephew's was new.

They were on lock down for a while, and I just found out today that the card
was not returned or replaced.  I called the Warden today, but he was not
available and I'm waiting on a call back.  I wrote up a letter to the Region
II director Eason to get action.  My nephew can't go anywhere outside his
dorm including commissary.  I find this completely unacceptable, and I feel
this is a crafty way to torture the inmates and exposes them to unwanted
attention by staff because he can't prove who he is.  Thankfully he is
healthy and doesn't need any medication.

Has anyone else experienced this at Beto Unit or elsewhere?

Thanks,
Kim Harris
