Bhai Usama,

Modern research is based on experimentation & observation, and what Ibn Al Qayyam wrote was based on the vision of a Mo'min's heart.
Forgetfulness may be caused by different factors, but it starts with forgetting ALLAH, it is a disease caused by the evil spell of JINN & for its implication, the devil will try to get you involved in some of his TRAPS to forget Allah.

First of all, forgetfulness is for those who forget Allah.
وَلا تَكُونُوا كَالَّذِينَ نَسُوا اللَّهَ فَأَنسَاهُمْ أَنفُسَهُمْ أُوْلَئِكَ هُمُ الفَاسِقُونَ
Excess of sins, never repenting to the LORD, never asking for forgiveness, watching unlawful women, dish antenna, etc. are detrimental enough to destroy your memory. And to fix your forgetfulness, you need to recite QURAN daily, to watch the Huroof of Quran, to pray 5 times daily with Jamaat in masjid, doing Miswak, doing Istighfar & Zikr, & as much as you can collect to please your Allah.

A book named كشف الخفاء ومزيل الإلباس عما اشتهر من الأحاديث على ألسنة الناس was written by Imam Ismail Al Shafa'ee Al Ajlooni.
He has quoted the following Hadith which describes various reasons of forgetfulness & the solution as well.
Six cause forgetfulness, eating mice wastes, leaving the lice ALIVE, urinating in stagnant water, cutting / disturbing the queue, chewing the gum & eating sour apple. Cutting or disturbing the queue can be the queue of walking animals, insects, etc. Sometimes, you disturb the queue of crawling ants; try to be careful. And my Allah Knows the best.

I shall forward to you the article on Frankincense written by Ibn Al Qayyam.

Subject: Chewing Gum and memory

Assalam u alaikum

Brother Hasan.

I wish you the best of health and spirits. Recently i read an email forward from you regarding the benefits of frankincense. The email was very informative. Jazak Allah u khairan. Of the multiple ways mentioned for using frakincense , it was mentioned that chewing it could have an adverse effect on memory. Today i was browsing on the net and found some relevant sites , stating that tests had been performed in this regard which showed that chewing gum has positive effects on memory. I would like to know your point of view too. assalaam
Request for duas
Osama
