I've just started using TB (2.0.0.14) and successfully setup
btinternet mail but can not get Hotmail to work.
Am using Vista and have installed addons Webmail 1.3.2 + Webmail
Hotmail 1.2.18 (domains running). Created Webmail account setting
username and server as instructed. Have also read and tried the
"Hotmail Howto" which didn't make any difference. "GetMail" gives the
green light and states connnecting to hotmail.com but that's it - no
password request, no error given. But I can send mail successfully.
Anyone with suggestions.
Thanks

Is there a message in the error console.

Do you have a virus checker or firewall

Having spoken to a friend with TB, I've made some alterations to the
account. Now message from Hotmail says "Mail server pop3.live.com
responded: mailbox for nikig...@hotmail.com is not available".
Untrue and have checked CapsLock not on.
Changes made include setting a email account (and tried web mail with
same response) up with:
Incoming mail server (POP3) box, type pop3.live.com.
Outgoing mail server (SMTP) box, type smtp.live.com.
Incoming server (POP3) box, type 995.
Outgoing server (SMTP) box, type 25.
Under both Incoming server (POP3) and Outgoing server (SMTP), select
the This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) check box.

The error console is empty.
Yes I have a virus checker, Norton

If you have a free Hotmail account then your friend has not served you
well. You cannot use those servers for free Hotmail accounts.

If you want to use the Webmail extensions to receive and send Hotmail
in Thunderbird then:

the server is *always* localhost (or its numeric value 127.0.0.1)

For POP the port is 110
User Name: youru...@hotmail.com
Use secure connection: Never

For SMTP the port is 25
User Name: youru...@hotmail.com
Secure connection: None

Also check in the Hotmail extension setting (POP) tab fro your account
and select the right account type. For most Hotmail users now the
most likely choice is Hotmail Live but if WebDav will work for you (it
will only work on very old free accounts) then stick with that option
- it is far the best.

Starting from scratch with the following settings for a web mail
account the message "connected to host" is temp displayed but gets no
further.
Account Settings:
Account Name <my name HOT>
Your Name <my name HOT>
Email Address <niki...@hotmail.com>
Outgoing SMTP (niki...@hotmail.com - localhost)
Server Settings:
Server Type POP Mail Server
Server Name <localhost> Port <110>
UserName <niki...@hotmail.com>
Security Settings <Never>
Outgoing Server (SMTP) Settings:
Server Name <localhost>
Port <25>
UserName <niki...@hotmail.com>
Secure Connection <None>

If I attempt to send an email for this account I'm informed that
connecting to the SMTP server localhost failed. Is either unavailable
or refusing connections.

Guess I am still getting the server settings wrong, but can not see
it.

Hi!

I have exactly the same kind of problem.
I cannot connect through pop3.live.com: it says Mail server
pop3.live.con responded:authorization failed.
It maight seem stupid, but what do they refer to as "localhost"?

I also tried izzymail, but it doesn t really work.
Thanks

You need to make sure that the port settings in Thunderbird for POP is
110 (seems you have) and that SMTP in Thunderbird for the account is
port 25

Now you may have messed up the main Webmail extension based on your
friends misinformation. You need to make sure that the POP port in
that extension is 110 and the SMTP port is 25.

Apologies for failing to ask you to check that in my earlier post.

Yep, all correct. I've even uninstalled and reinstalled addons webmail
& webmail - hotmail and recreated the mail account just in case. Made
no difference, still not working. Bum.....

Looks like its Norton causing the problem. I turned if off and
bingo!!!
When I figure out which bit of Norton is the culprit, I'll re-check
previous postings for a solution.
Thanks.

I accidentally replied to grenouille last instead of this thread, and
now can't seem to find the message I sent him. Long story short, this
is the second computer where this is happening to me, one running
Vista x64 and one running Vista x86, BUT I JUST FIGURED OUT THE
SOLUTION!!! A HUGE thanks to Alanrf for compelling me to try this:

MY SOLUTION: For me, the problem (believe it or not) was the server
setting. I have yet to try this on the x86 OS, but I'm sure it's the
solution there as well. Instead of entering the incoming server as
"localhost" enter it as the corresponding IP address: 127.0.0.1

I tried this as a last ditch effort to fix this on my computer today.
This follows what turned into a two day kluge fest to get my parents
old (but naively updated to the featureless, newer T&C) msn account
working on their new Vista box -- including importing all their old
emails.

Hope this works for you guys to!! I feel as if I've regained a very
small part of my soul back from Micro$oft. ; )

Just a follow up on my first post:

Replacing localhost with 127.0.0.1 has worked perfectly on both the
32- and 64-bit versions of Vista my parents and I are running (Home
Premium and Ultimate, respectively). This has solved the problem for
me on both POP and SMTP servers. My account is a fairly old school
(before MSN Live debuted), free Hotmail account, and theirs is an even
older (I think at least 6 or 7 years at this point), free MSN account
that they converted to a pay account several years back. On both of
these accounts, a fresh install of Thunderbird 2.0.0.16, Webmail
1.3.2, and Webmail Hotmail 1.2.18 (without changing any settings or
deviating from the setup guides except when changing localhost to
127.0.0.1) has worked perfectly.
