There was some planned maintenance on this mail system set for 22nd
January 08. However, before then and subsequently, I cannot retrieve
mail from any of my @lycos.co.uk accounts.

The error returned is "Sending of password did not succeed. Mail
server localhost responded: Comms error from xx...@lycos.co.uk"

Any ideas or suggestions. Nothing has been changed by me on my system
since this thing last worked properly.

Sounds as though Lycos's maintenance may have changed something and
broken the extension. If so, nothing you can do until an updated version
of the extension becomes available.

I'm having the same problem. Lycos stopped working on 22 Jan after the
update.

I noticed you can no longer access lycos email via http on
http://webdav.lycos.co.uk/httpmail.asp

You have to use http://f007.mail.lycos.co.uk/ and its very slow now.

Hi!
Im using Thunderbird 2.0.0.9 - WebMail 1.3.1 - WebMail Lycos 1.2.3
mein OS ist Windows XP SP2 home,
and ive got permanently an error while receiving new mails from Lycos:

"Warning
Error while sending the password. The mail-Server localhost replied:
Comms Error from adx....@lycos.de"

Then it asks for my password.

But at the webpage lycos.de i can login with my password!
Please help! There are some other german people having this error!
Thanks Ansgar

Same problem here. After 22 Jan no Lycos email from within TB.

Certainly looks very much like what I suspected when I answered the
first post on this subject. The maintenance that Lycos has just done has
changed something in the web interface and broken the webmail extension
for Lycos. With so many people having the same problem, it's almost
certain that it's something that Lycos has done, rather than that so
many people have all developed the same error in their systems at the
same time. No doubt, if Lycos have changed their web site, a new version
of the extension will be released soon.

The last time Lycos did an update to took a few days before they
remembered to switch the webdav access back on.

Don't know if that helps, but I encountered the same problems with my
lycos.de account.

I changed the server from localhost to pop.lycos.[you should add your
extension here] - now it works! :-)

Nor can I make it work! I've tried pop and pop3, but these just
deliver different error messages. I can't quite work out how this
would work with webmail and localhost requirements - unless lycos.de
is like my old Yahoo.co.uk account (from 2003), which allowed direct
access from an email client before it was "improved" away, but which
still does for my original account.

Today (Wednesday 30th January 08) this worked on ONE of my Lycos.co.uk
accounts for a short while before it reverted to the Comms error.
There were some error messages about not being able to DEL messages.
But for now, it's broke again.

I managed to use Thunderbird to connect yesterday but today it fails again.

At least Lycos seem to b trying to get it working.

Now I'm sure what is happening. If you have mail the Lycos webmail
extension logs on and downloads it correctly. If your Lycos mailbox
is
empty, the extension reports a comms error.

Sending the password did not succeed. Mail server localhost responded:
Comms Error from ******@lycos.co.uk

PS

I retract this completely. I now have no new messages and it is
working perfectly

so much for my previous tests :(

You seem to be right about empty mailboxes on Lycos, as mine worked OK
when I sent myself some. However, I still find the problem is
intermittent i.e. I don't have any mail in Lycos, but push the button
once and it's "no new messages on the server". Do it again and
suddenly it's "Comms error" time. Maybe this is happening
simultaneously with a fix being applied to the Lycos mailserver.
However, it does look as if it's getting back together (though I'd
like to know what was wrong!)

has anybody manged to get this working?. i've not been able to access
lycos.co.uk since around 17/01, i'm always getting the comms error.
i've not managed a successful attempt in 16 days. i tried with outlook
on my work laptop and it seems to work now and again, sometimes when
it keeps prompting me over and over for the password it downloads the
messages anyway. access via the web is ok, but this is not much use
to me since i have all my messages stored locally in thunderbird since
2005. :-/

i tried sending messages to three different help addresses, and not
got a single response except for one automated response in german.
maybe i should just cut my losses and start using gmail...

In my case it only works around 5% of the time. I get the password
error along with

The STAT command did not succeed. Error getting message number and
sizes. Mail server localhost responded: Comms Error from
****@lycos.co.uk

There are problems at lycos. The forum at

Now has 4 pages of complaints, so its not the webmail extension that
has the problem

Lycos has new site (at least new to me) called Lycos-com. This site
recognizes my Lycos-UK-CO user name but does not let me log on.

Webmail for Lycos downloads old emails at random from my in box (cause
I don't delete em), so its not working 100% but at least no more STAT
com's error messages. It does struggle to log on though.

We have had problems with the usage of WebDav and LycosInside.
Inbetween, they should have been resolved for most users.

it's still not working for me. in fact, now *once* i didn't get any
errors, but it said "there are no new messages on the server", which
is clearly wrong as i'm looking at 14 of them on the web interface,
otherwise it's the same old comms error or STAT error..

i have got it to work with outlook..

i think the problem might be with the extension. access seems to be
reasonably reliable with MS outlook, but it still not working at all
with thunderbird. almost always i'm getting the STAT error, getting
number and size of messages.

the size of a log is 600K, and it all looks fine (i can see that it is
finding my list of folders and whatnot) until the very end when it
shows: 20:37:00--nsLycos.js: notify : Exception : ReferenceError.
Error message: mainObject is not defined 385

is there anything i can do to get it working???

i've tried the 1.24b1 version of the extension, and did what you
recommended in the email. i was able to get my mail downloaded via
thunderbird. i went back and tried version 1.23 and that still does
not work. i've only tried a couple of times with 1.24b1 but it worked
both times without that STAT error (mainObject not defined in the
logs).

i've noticed that although that extension seems to be allowing me to

access still seems fairly ropey, but sometimes when it does download
the headers, when i try to read/download a message it just deletes it
completely without showing it to me. it's doing this pretty
regularly. it's only deleting it from thunderbird when i try to read
it, but the message remains on the server. nothing is written to the
webmail logs.

Could it be that Thunderbird's junk mail filter is deleting the mails?
If the messages are downloaded and appear in the message list, the
extension has done its work, the rest is up to Thunderbird itself.

no, i'm sure it's not the junk filter because the message does not go
into junk or deleted messages (which happens on download for me with
other accounts like yahoo and gmail), and may reappear as a new
message again when i try to download the headers. i've just about
given up.. lycos' customer service is beyond a joke, not to mention
their tech staff must be clueless. there's at least 10 problems which
happen at random with no consistency. the only consistent thing is
that it never works 100% correctly. i may try again if there's
another update for the extension..
