He has already stated that the RETR issue is an issue with hotmail's
servers - not a webmail issue.

If it's a Hotmail server issue - what's the solution?

29b10 and 9b1 is working - only minor thing is it seems to be only
grabbing the first page of unread mail each time it goes through a
download cycle. But it is removing the unread state so the next cycle
grabs the next page of unread mail.

I can live with that for now until a non-beta version comes out.

I get negative vibes with 29b10. No mail is downloaded for me at all.
No first page and no other page, just negative vibes on RETR.

Hi Folks

Same symptoms as the above post.

When accessing hotmail, it tries to down load 38 messages (about half
were new) and the neagtive vibes on RETR command displays.

If its a MS server issue -- is there a workaround for this type of
situation or should we sit tight for the final fix ?

b9 partially worked for me (downloaded and deleted messages from
server) but would not send.

b10 appears to work 100% for me (downloads and sends). Everything
would appear to be back to normal for me.

For those of you getting errors with b9/b10:

Have you changed your Windows live settings to make the Hotmail Inbox
your homepage when you log in?

If not, you need to do this. Nothing will work until you change that
setting.

To the Webmail author, many thanks for your efforts!!

If it's an MS server issue, it's down to MS to fix it. I don't know if
there's any connection, but yesterday my daughter couldn't open mails in
her Hotmail account using Firefox, but she could open them in Internet
Explorer. Could be that MS are using non standard code in the web pages
that locks out users of other brands of software?

Hi Folks

Yes, I have set the hotmail options to open the hotmail inbox when I
log in.

For the record, I have installed the latest TB and add-on versions for
hotmail and webmail.

I know this is a tricky problem and many thanks to Webmail author.

If anyone else has a temporary workaround, I would be grateful.

I think that for those lucky few where the latest add-ons are working,
they dont have much email in their in-boxes ?

Maybe the solution is to delete all old (and downloaded) mails out of
hotmail and just leave the new ones ?

Around the same time this Hotmail Messed Up, I Had 2 incident (I was using Firefox latest, and a couple of weeks ago upgraded Kaspersky 2010 Internet suite, as fresh install)

First item:-
Moved 4 of 5 important Emails WRONGLY placed in Spam/Junk Folder, on the sight, and, as reported in a previous email, I marked 4 emails then press action, and mark as NOT SPAM/JUNK, and wait for it to move the 4 items to INbox where should be.
I THEN GOT A SERVER ERROR SAYING UNABLE TO EXECUTE, THIS IS A SERVER ERROR. THIS IS NOT AN ERROR ON YOUR PC.
I Tried several times, to no Success.
I Then Tried One Junk'Spam Email at a Time.
This Time All but One email in the moved from the Junk/spam, Moved successfully but One REmained and that still gave same error,
SERVER ERROR SAYING UNABLE TO EXECUTE, THIS IS A SERVER ERROR. THIS IS NOT AN ERROR ON YOUR PC
I Tried a couple of more times then gave up, and restarted Firefox, and the Junk/spam had gone from the junk but I panic as I am not sure if one email is in the inbox, or lost.
I Also, when getting downloading 1-39, and worried if i caused it, moved a couple of emails to deleted box on Hotmail to see if helped.

Second Time, on the 30th July, I went to send a Birthday ecard from my free MSN free Cards, to send to her in the US, but was unable to.
I Did a google search for it, it, hit the link, and Got something like
UNABLE TO VIEW PAGE, SERVER ERROR.
I tried loads of times, even with Kaspersky turned off, and following links from within MSN homepage.
as soon as got to page said SERVER.

Thanks for trying to sort it. :-)

Hi Everyone

It also worth mentioning that hotmail still works perfectly on my
Blackberry -- so whatever changes have been made by MS, the BB guys
seem to cope with it.

Unless of course, the BB uses a different method to manage hotmail
than TB does.

You could move older emails to a temporary folder in Hotmail, just to
keep them out of the way while the extension accesses and downloads new
mails. This way you will still have a copy of mail on Hotmail's servers.

I would guess that your Blackberry either views the mail in a web
browser as MS would prefer us all to do, or RIM have done a deal with MS
to enable BBs to access Hotmail.

Colin,

Yes, I so far I never have more than a page of e-mail. TB is set to
check every 15 minutes and to remove downloaded messages from the
server. Sorry you're still having problems. Perhaps mirroring my TB
settings will provide a temporary solution for you.

The BB is almost certainly using Hotmail's normal POP3 access, not
screen scraping.

That would make sense. Blackberry's use their own servers for internet
access, so no problem about firewalled company systems.

Hi Webmail Author

As you can see, the user base (including me) is still encountering
problems with the hotmail add-on.

I know there is a change on the MS side and their servers are the
problem which is a real problem for everyone.

Do you think this will be fixable in the near term or should we
continue to use hotmail in a browser for the moment (custing and
pasting old stuff from TB into firefox/hotmail) or while yet ?

Kind Regards

I honestly appreciate all your hard work on this add-on, but I don't
understand what you mean when you say it is a server error...
I mean - Microsoft are not allowing the usage of webmail, the add-on
is a sort of a hack to make us able to download such mail, so how can
that be called a server error when the webmail isn't a MS/Hotmail
service?

Emfuser

Right

MS doesn't want things like the webmail Thunderbird extension to work
with its service.

I suspect they purposefully keep altering the service to keep breaking
services like webmail.

I see! The extension uses (used?) the get message source function to
retrieve emails complete with all headers etc. If MS have broken this
function, then the extension cannot work.

Not if you want to download the complete mail including all the header
information. A "screenscraper" could retrieve the text content but not
other parts of the mail such as attachments and (most important if you
want to check the authenticity of mails) the header information showing
where and when the mail was sent from and its route to you.

The getmessagesource issue seems rather unusual. Clearly it is a
problem for some users. I have just checked all 5 of my Hotmail
accounts and View Message Source is not a problem for any of them. If
it were a generic problem with this set of Hotmail changes we all
should be affected.

It is clearly not the intent of MS to remove the function - hopefully
they will quickly diagnose the problem for the accounts that are
experiencing the problem.

Or change notifications off then you get no emails, but still can access group on web, and still send from TB, and switch back to notifications on if you need it again. That is what i do may once a year when i might lose my service for a few hours, before always fixed. Has always worked.
I only used hotmail a couple of decades ago because i had aol messenger for family and friends, hotmail for friendsm yahoo for messenger and mail using cross platform and messengers. Shame about the current exten, but happens every year or two, but since hotmail stopped using Dav, it has been more frequent.
Hotmail has said they will use IMAP but still have not, and still throw family and important mail in their Junk folder which you can never be turned off, so i will cut down on Hotmail mail use until they set up IMAP. Google is free and does both IMAP and the old POP. Yahoo does both IMAP access to all folders in TB, but requires a premium account to get that, but is worth it if it works, Yahoo free account is the old POP account. AOL is free, and used to be the slower DAV, like Hotmail was, but it jumped from DAV to IMAP, missing the old POP, straight to IMAP. Hotmail went from slower DAV all folders to POP account for everyone. No IMAP for premium either.
I do hope fixed soon or IMAP for Hotmail.

Hotmail does provide a free IMAP experience for all Hotmail accounts.
However to use it you must use Microsoft's Windows Live Mail client
and Microsoft's proprietary DeltaSync connection method (which
replaced WebDAV). Microsoft wants Hotmail users to use this method
because it uses their servers more efficiently. The only rolled free
POP access after they had done their best to get most users on
WLM.

Just tried this myself while checking the spam folder on Hotmail
website. Viewing the message source just produced a page of meaningless
symbols. I guess if I was using the extensions rather than POP, I would
have found my Hotmail access through Thunderbird to be broken.

server does not support RFC 5746, see CVE-2009-3555 is just an
informative message. These servers are using older software. They can
possible allow the "Project Mogul" attack.

The TLS protocol, and the SSL protocol 3.0 and possibly earlier, as
used in Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0, mod_ssl in
the Apache HTTP Server 2.2.14 and earlier, OpenSSL before 0.9.8l,
GnuTLS 2.8.5 and earlier, Mozilla Network Security Services (NSS)
3.12.4 and earlier, multiple Cisco products, and other products, does
not properly associate renegotiation handshakes with an existing
connection, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to insert data
into HTTPS sessions, and possibly other types of sessions protected by
TLS or SSL, by sending an unauthenticated request that is processed
retroactively by a server in a post-renegotiation context, related to
a "plaintext injection" attack, aka the "Project Mogul" issue.

As far as I know both Firefox and Thunderbird clients latest versions
support the latest standard; we just waiting the others to upgrade
their software.

Eugene

The "Hotmail-SR-BETA: emailOnloadHandler : Exception : TypeError.
Error message: aTemp[1] is undefined

I dont get the negative vibes message anymore but I never get any
messages. If I try to "Get Mail" it says the folder is being
processed...seems to be indefinately and I still have 70 new messages on
hotmail in my inbox.

With the b13 version, I kept getting a localhost has timed out error and
finally logged into hotmail online and started going through my 70+ new
emails and when finished, left all but 4 undeleted and marked them as
unread, closed the browser window and went back to thunderbird which was
running in the background and I had 4 new hotmail messages, the same
messages I had left in hotmail online. I marked each as read and logged
in online again and found 0 messages in my inbox and those 4 same
messages in my deleted items. Seems to be working now when at first it
wasn't...strange...and also shouldn't have those 4 messages still been
in my inbox, just marked as unread, not in my deleted items?

It's a same result for me it's not possible to upload any mail from me, maybe microsoft hotmail will restore other parameters or communicate with thunderbird team, the new parameters of  pop server.

Thanks for your work.  nota i try the method of Ludovic Hilirmann : uninstall webmail-hotmail . xpi but it's not working if configured like normal pop account;

Where to start. The folder has tons of log files, especially one
"CookieManager..." file that is 865mb!! It has yesterdays date.
Additionally I notcied that password is clearly visible in these log
files too. Not that you would care but that should be disclosed to
folks dontcha think?

Since the 29b13 and changing the following,

>> Hotmail Settings
>> Customize your mail
>> Windows Live Home settings
>> Choose which page to display first when you sign in to Hotmail:
>> Show me my inbox when I sign in - enabled this option

and after leaving my TB open while it said it was processing folders and
then saying localhost timed out (took about 10 minutes), twice and then
leaving it open while I worked on other things, it now seems to be
working, well except that read messages are moved to deleted items
rather than just marked read on the server, but this actually works
better for me. If you still think my log files can help others just let
me know which ones you want.

Warning in the new extension you need to options and put "mark in
server messages read" you cannot put "transfer only unread messages"
because this last option give one error.

I have all 3 options checked and the 29b13 version is now working for
me for the last few days.

download only unread
mark messages as read
download junk email

At first 29b13 didn't work and gave me a localhost timeout error but I
left TB open and then I noticed new messages after about an hour or so.

If I am not mistaken Olivier is having a problem sending email; hence,
upload term used.

I am also having problem uploading email. In my case the extension is
not communicating correctly with my virus scanner. If have AVG set to
scan outgoing emails then the message is disappearing when sent for
the AVG scan. Only the scan message part is sent. If I turn off the
AVG scanner then the email is sent correctly (at least on short
messages).

Hi been following your solutions and the problem is fixed for me.
Installed the latest webmail1.3.9b1 and Hotmail1.2.29b13, then deleted
my Hotmail account in Thunderbird. Re-added my Hotmail account as new
into Thunderbird and all of my emails came flooding into my inbox and
no RETR or negative vibes problem for now. I am sure in the future
Micro(soft(inthehead) will mess everyone around again.
Cheers this problem was irritating me.;-)
P.S. any chance of a Lycos.com extension again:p

The steps taken by potbic have not led to to a solution of the issues
with Webmail. The actions taken have simply followed the often
repeated solution of using the free Hotmail POP & SMTP servers which
is now the default action in Thunderbird when a Hotmail account is
created.

This is not a criticism of that action just pointing out that with
this solution you cannot download any folders other than the Inbox.
If that is your only need then follow along but also recognize that it
has nothing whatsoever to do with the Webmail add-ons.

I am having a similiar problem with different error messages; most
times only getting the 1355. Try disabling your anti-virus scanner and
see if that will help you download the messages. Remember to re-start
the scanner and scan your system afterwards for viruses. Just
disabling the email scanner in AVG didn't help me; I had to disable
the resident scanner too.

I am using AVG and for some reason I am only having this problem with
the Hotmail extension on receive but am unable to send complete emails
unless it off using any of the webmail outgoing boxes.

You can check if yours is one of the accounts affected by the bug by
going to the Hotmail site and attempting to view the source code of one
of your mails. If this returns a page of readable text then you are not
affected, on the other hand you get a page full of meaningless symbols,
your account is one that is affected. In this case the extension will
not work for you until Microsoft fix the problem.

With this version (1.2.30b1), TB starts downloading messages (on the
bottom of the screen, I can see how many new messages there are on the
server), but then the warning about the RETR command appears...
I checked the source code of mails at hotmail and indeed: a page full
of meaningless symbols :-s So it must be microsoft who can fix the
problem. I will try to contact them about this.
Anyway, many thanks for the help!

Hi all,

I'm not completely sure if this thread is about the same problem as
the one in the following thread:
http://groups.google.com/group/thunderbird-webmail-extension/browse_thread/thread/3f79463c0ecee528

Take a look at the work around I posted in that thread (changing the
"network.http.accept-encoding" configuration value from "gzip,deflate"
to "deflate" in Thunderbird). It's based on the work around for
viewing the message source of an email in Hotmail posted here:
https://windowslivehelp.com/thread.aspx?threadid=81cbf352-9083-4f9b-85ba-6d83448d4f62

I don't want this setting changed permanently, since it may have a
performancy penalty, but it worked for me. Now we'll have to wait for
Microsoft to fix the problem at their servers for a permanent
solution.

Kind regards,
Ice Thijs
