No Hotmail Accounts Found - Redux

I've put together a much more detailed description
of the problem along with some screenshots to try
to make it easier to understand the issue.

I'm unable to set up a Webmail/Hotmail account in TB.
Let me review what I've done (several times) and
maybe someone can spot what I've done wrong.

1. I installed Thunderbird and set up email accounts
for my Comcast email account and another for my
GMail account. Both work perfectly.

2. I downloaded web-mail-1-2-2.xpi and hotmail-1-2-2.xpi.

3. I installed webmail and rebooted. Webmail now shows
POP and SMTP servers running and many domains including
hotmail.com.

4. In installed hotmail and rebooted. When I now click on
Webmail-Hotmail Options, the Accounts Tab is empty but
for a red triangle around an explamation point and the
words: No Hotmail Accounts Found. The Domains tab shows
a number of hotmail and msn domains including hotmail.com
I infer I should see something to do with setting up a
hotmail account in the Accounts Tab but no joy.

5. I've tried setting up hotmail accounts in TB before and
after installing Webmail/Hotmail but with the same result.
The hotmail component shows No Accounts. The properties
page for the account/servers screen in TB shows it as
Server Type: POP Mail Server, Host as: localhost
Port: 110 and Username as my username with no domain.

I've uploaded: HotmaiNoAccountslProblem.zip (113KB) with
captures of the accounts and server screens to show my
settings and the No Accounts screen.

No matter what I do, the Hotmail component only shows a
No Accounts error msg in the Accounts tab and I cannot
set up a hotmail account.

I can't think of what I might be doing wrong. It's a
pretty straight-forward process.

If anyone has any ideas at all, I'd love to hear them.

Just to make it unmistakable ... this is the User name in the "Server
settings" panel of the Hotmail account in Thunderbird

I don't know, but you don't tell you made a webmail account in TB.

Did you create one?

Correct. When setting up the new account, I specified Web Mail as the
type, then my name, then digad...@hotmail.com for the email
address. Is there anything else I can tell you?

You got it! You were both on the right path but it's (I think) an
issue with how the account setup works. When I set up the account,
each entry such as personal name and email address had an example to
follow when entering the information. I did so. However, as you
clearly suspected, the server had only the email address without the
@hotmail.com domain on the end. That's the way it was set up by the
program, not by me. After reading and mulling over what you and Lord
Vacuity were saying, I went to Server Settings for that account and
added "@hotmail.com" to the email address. It's now downloading all
my hotmail messages!

I've reviewed what I did and what was required by the program and I
think it's a "feature" (I'm a software developer myself and that's
what we call unexpected program behavior <grin>). Unless I'm denser
than normal, the program should have left the @hotmail.com on or
documented that it should be added for webmail accounts.

You guys were on the right track the whole time - I just had to have
it made, well... unmistakable.

Thanks Lord Vacuity - see my response to alanrf below. You had it
right but I wouldn't believe the program was doing it incorrectly (eg
putting in the name with no domain into Server Settings/User Name).
It works like a charm now!

Unfortunately, it seems that more work remains to be done in the
"Webmail" option of account setup.

It does quite a bit but the default in Thunderbird is to leave off the
domain portion of the account name.

It is been a long time I installed webmail and webmail-hotmail extension.

But if I recall correctly, there is just asked to your emailaddress. And there you should put the whole hotmail address. So I don't know what the unexpected behaviour is.

I just checked (v1.2.0) and I have to put my emailaddress in the first screen of the wizard, and on the second screen I have to use my username. That username is also your full hotmail address.
I don't know for sure but I think I put this in my howto.

May be a case of "clicking through" too quickly when setting up,
Thunderbird helpfully puts what it thinks may be your user name in the
relevant field, based on your email address, when you set up a new
account, if it doesn't get it right, (and it won't when setting up a
webmail account), you can type the correct user name in before continuing.

I've always used my ISP's own SMTP server to send mail using either my
Hotmail or Yahoo web mail accounts from Thunderbird, no problem there.
I've just been looking at using the localhost server as provided by the
webmail extensions, it appears that you can set the localhost to connect
to either Hotmail or Yahoo, but you can't switch "on the fly" according
to which service you're using. If you set the server to use Yahoo, then
emails sent using your Hotmail account will appear to recipients to come
from your Yahoo address, or vice versa if you set the server to use
Hotmail. Am I missing something here? Is there any way of setting up
multiple localhost SMTP servers so you can use the one that matches the
account being used?
No big deal if this can't be done, I can continue as before using either
my ISP server or the googlemail server, which works fine. I'm just
curious as to whether or not this can be done.

I think you can just add smtp server in the account window. (where you can see all accounts settings). Then you can select for each account which smtp server should be used.

Yes, it could indeed be that it automatically takes the first part of your email address (user on the domain) as your username(which is standard for pop accounts). Maybe it isn't possible for an extension to change that behaviour in the wizard.

The problem is that there is only one localhost SMTP server, you can
only put one account's details in at a time. I just tried putting two
localhost entries in the server list, one with Yahoo account details,
and one with Hotmail. The first one works OK, the second gets into an
endless loop of password requests when I try to send.

I have a separate localhost SMTP entry set up for each of my 4 Hotmail
accounts, my 2 Yahoo accounts and my Gmail account. Each SMTP entry
is associated with the approriate account in the "Account settings"
panel and each account by default sends out through the Webmail
extension for that account without any problems.

yep, me 3. i have a seperate localhost smtp for each webmail account

Must be me then. I haven't managed to get two local host SMTPs up and
running. Doesn't really matter as long as I can use my ISp or Googlemail
SMTPs.

when i set up each account the webmail automatically added another
webmail smtp server even if it wants to use your default, but they are
all the same so you have to edit each one for a specific account.

even if you erased the extra smtp servers you can still add them. i
changed the titles of each so i know which account each goes with, as
long as the server says localhost

Whether I set up the local host manually or let it set up automatically
when setting an account up, the first one set up sends OK whether Yahoo
or Hotmail, the second one just goes into an endless loop of asking for
the password.
