Hi. I am the contact person for three cats at two different houses
Uptown. My father-in-law was able to get into Uptown today, and rescued
his cat Lucy on Hampson St (near Short). She should be taken off the
list.

He was also able to drop off food for our two cats Leo and Bagheera on
Lowerline St. (through a pet door...). He did not actually see our cats
though, so we don't know if they're safe. I don't know if they should
be taken off the list or not??

FYI, my father-in-law entered through Jefferson Parish, and was able to
go down River Road (technically named Leake Ave.) to get into Uptown.
There were soldiers/guardsmen around, and they were letting folks just
drive in. He stopped and asked, just to be sure, and they said they
were not going to stop folks from getting back to their houses. I'm in
Alabama, but I'm planning to drive back over tomorrow to try to collect
belongings from our house (it did not flood).

Please remove my e-mail from this list. I have to use it for work and cannot have all of this e-mail on this list. I appreciate very much what you are doing.

I was in new orleans yesterday and getting in was not
so easy. we were stopped 3 times by national guard
and told they were only letting aid in. We happened
to have a military id on us and that was our ticket
in. others were told to turn around.

Thank you. I'm making this update.

No. I don't think so. I'm giong to create a section call "Pet
Updates", and post messages like this one there.

> FYI, my father-in-law entered through Jefferson Parish, and was able to

And I'll create a section called "Getting In", and post messages
like this one there.

Thank you. Sharing this information is what the group is about.

I'd love to go to the Mid-City, Uptown forums and ask about
routes in and out. They are inspecting homes.

That's NOLA.com townhall forum. Ask Trudge, Sgt, Daisy Cat.

Post a link to the pets page in any Lake Charles forum, and get
people who will a) help foxmo b) tell foxmo about pets.

Maybe someone is willing to run to the store for foxmo an get
all provisions ready to go. No need to make it a solo effort.

Purple Hippopotomums

I don't think Buddy is subscribed to this group. I think he's
getting e-mail from someone off list, in chain letters.

I'm going to ask him what silly word I posted in a direct e-mail.

I can manage this list. I cannot manage chain letters. Sorry.

3. Rescue Boater Needs Help NOW
by GoldenRetRes, 9/8/05 17:44 ET
YAHOO - Permission granted to contact the wonderful boat owner who needs
help and is on the way...jord2200@bellsouth.net Please call me at
305-245-3773 about rescue efforts.Deborah Jordan
PLUS SHE ADDED:I also told Noah that I was going to rescue the NO animals ,
St. Bernard Parrish, 9th Ward area first.
Thanks Marty. Yes, I have already spoken with the HSUS and let them know I
am coming with a boat. They were so happy, but say someone will have to call
me back to try and coordinate something, however, they don't know when that
would be. I don't feel we have time to wait because time is running out! I
have gotten in touch with Noah's Wish which is staged in Heritage Park,
Slidell. I am suppose to meet up with them as soon as I can arrive there. I
am planning on leaving here in the morning (Miami) and driving straight
through. A am also suppose to be having a truck with a reefer unit
(refrigerated trailer) going to the site, cross my fingers that pans out.
I'm in the process of trying to get crates, supplies and other necessary
items to take for the recovery effort. If you know anyone who would like to
go along and help or that has crates I could pick up along the way, that
would be great.
Thanks again.Deborah

4. wanted to let everyone to know that I have posted a few times re
rescueing my pets at Chapelle & gen diaz. Today my 18 year old daughter
accomplished what the coast guard and many other rescue organizations could
not, she got our dog and 3 of our 4 cats out of our 2nd story lakeview home
at the corner of Chapelle & gen. diaz. Twice today they returned to her with
bad news that our home was surrounded by downed power lines, downed trees,
and floating cars and they were unable to reach it. She would not take no
for an answer and convinced someone to take her in on a jet ski. She
returned with all but one of our beloved pets!!! I am so proud of her. Born
and raised in New Orleans, you can't tell her she can't do something!!

Have you been able to contact a group to let you into NO? I have a flat

the flood waters.
I already wrote him back with HSUS info, but he may want to go commanado.
I've written to him, asking form em addy...

6. Want to go to N.O. but worried about not being able to get in, email
raech...@yahoo.com and possibly you can go under the umbrella of rescue
group working in the hurricane area called Pets in Peril. got this info from
post 2646, pasted it below, PLEASE PLEASE, even 1 person able to go that can
save a few dogs is worth it:
On a local radio station this morning I heard about another animal rescue
group working in the hurricane area called Pets in Peril. The show host said
he checked them out and they were reputable. On the MSNBC website I found
this info "Pets In Peril leader Joe Renna said. "We need volunteers to drive
the vans and perform rescue operations. We need able bodied people." Renna
said people wanting more information about volunteering or donating supplies
should call (864) 222-1641"

Thank you. Expect a blog post on these items in a bit.

Status. I'm looking for someone to take over the blog part...

http://thinknola.com/blog/pets/

And I'm asking bloggers for a volunteer to step in and do as I
have done and moderate this list, and blog about these actions.

If you don't know what blogging is, just know that more people
can watch the web site than can watch the list. The list helps
me by getting a few people to respond quickly to questions, so
please don't go yet.

Cathy. Annette. If you want to edit that web site directly, and
post your updates directly there, let me know, and I'll create a
login. Thank you.

alan:
thought you might want to hear about my successul adventure to break
thru the barriers into new orleans...feel free to pass it on if you
wish..

THANKS FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE....I MADE IT IN AND ACTUALLY WITH THE USE OF
MY PRESS PASS ALONG WITH A STRONG TOUCH OF B.S. I MADE IT THROUGH ALL
THE ROAD BLOCKS THE CHECKPOINTS AND GOT TO THE MID CITY BOAT LANDING
AREA AFTER ACTUALLY DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE THAT'S SUPPOSED TO BE
RESERVED FOR MILITARY AND EMERGENCY VEHICLES ONLY...I DIDN'T
STOP..AFTER WAITING FOR BEST FRIENDS TO CONTACT AN AREA PET RESCUE BOAT
TO COME FOR OURS I FINALLY MANAGED TO HITCH A BOAT RIDE WITH A KIND
ILLINOIS TROOPER WITH HIS MOTORIZED JOHN BOAT...WHEN I GOT TO MY HOUSE
ON CLEVELAND THE DOORS HAD BEEN SMASHED IN (BOTH WROUGHT IRON SECURITY
AND INNER SOLID WOOD DOORS)..LEAVING THE HOUSE WIDE OPEN...I SEARCHED
AND SEARCHED AND CALLED OUT AND OUT TURNING OVER FURNITURE AND CHECKING
IN CLOSETS AND CUPBOARDS...BUT I COULD NOT FIND MY BELOVED SIAMESE CAT.
> ..MEANWHILE THE WATERS IN THE AREA WERE STILL 5-6 FEET DEEP PLUS ALL THE RESCUE BOATS COMING AND GOING HAD CAUSED LOTS A WATER TO RUSH (THE WAKE)INTO THE 1ST FLOORS OF MANY HOMES...
I WAS GREATLY DISHEARTENED..AND IF IT HADN'T BEEN FOR SOME OREGON
HUMANE SOCIETY GUY WHO I PASSED UPON MY EXIT OUT VIA ST.CHARLES ST.
TELLING ME THAT HE DIDN'T THINK MY CAT WOULD HAVE ESCAPED MY HOUSE (2ND
FLOOR) AND JUMPED INTO THE WATER...HE SAID THAT THE HUMANE SOCIETY (OR
ONE OF THE PET RESCUERS) POSSIBLY WERE THE ONES THAT BROKE IN AND TOOK
HIM...HE TOLD ME TO CHECK WITH THE LAMAR DIXON FAIRGROUNDS IN
GONZALES...SO I STOPPED BY THERE ON MY WAY OUT...THAT WAS A SITE FOR
SORE EYES...HNUNDREDS & HUNDREDS OF DOGS & CATS & EVEN BIRDS BEING
TAKEN CARE OF ...I WALKED THRU THE CAT HOLDING SHELTERS AND SEARCHED
DESPERATELY FOR MY "CHING"...I WAS UNSUCCESSFUL...
THEN A REP.TOLD TO GO THE LSU AGRICULTURAL CENTER...SO I MADE THRU THE
UNBELIEVABLE TRAFFIC JAMS IN BATON ROUGE THAT OCCUR ON A DAILY BASIS
NOW THAT THEIR POPULATION HAS DOUBLE OVERNITE...AND FINALLY GOT TO THE
CAMPUS (TOOK ABOUT OVER 1 HOUR)AND SEARCHED IN THERE...HAD NO LUCK...SO
I RETURNED HOME...
UNFORTUANELY I HAD ON MY LIST OF ANIMAL RESCUE REQUESTS NONE IN AREAS
OTHER THAN THE MID CITY AND CITY PARK AREA...AND DUE TO MY INABILITY TO
GARNER A RIDE WITH THE ANIMAL RESCUE PEOPLE (GETTING THE RIDE FROM THE
ILL. POLICEMAN WHO HAD VERY LITTLE TIME TO HELP)...I WAS UNABLE TO
FULFILL MY COMPLETE RESCUE MISSION...I DID MANAGE TO HELP A KIND LADY
GET INTO ORLEANS WITH THE AID OF MY PRESS PASS SO WE COULD GET TO HER
UPTOWN/GARDEN DISTRICT HOME AND RESCUE HER CAT SUCCESSFULLY..AND FEED
THE STARYS OUTSIDE AS WELL...BUT IT WAS VERY DANGEROUS MOTIVATING THRU
THE STREETS WHAT WITH ALL THE FALLEN TREES,DOWNED LINES, AND NATIONAL
GUARDSMEN TROOPS ROAMING THE STREETS IN UNITS TOTING THEIR RIFLES AIMED
UP AT THE ROOFTOPS...YET MOST WERE VERY CORDIAL AND DIDN'T STOP ME WHEN
I GAVE THEM MY PRESS PASS AND TOHEM I WAS THERE TO COVER THE PET RESCUE
EFFORTS IN TOWN...
THE CITY OF NEW ORLEANS EXCEPT FOR THE DOWNTOWN/GARDEN/UPTOWN/FRENCH
QUARTER DISTRICTS IS STILL TOTALLY UNDER 4 FEET OF WATER &
HIGHER...WHILE STANDING ON THE AIRLINE HIWAY OVERPASS AT THE
INTERSECTION OF CARROLTON & TULANE I ALMOST BROKE DOWN AND CRIED...THE
CITY WAS EMPTY SAVE A STEAMY VIEW OF THE DOWNTOWN SKYLINE AND A
REFLECTION OF THE NEW CANAL THAT RUNS FROM WHERE I WAS STANDING TO
DOWNTOWN AND TO ALL POINTS IN BETWEEN...
I CONSIDER MYSELF AND FAILY OPTIMISTIC MAN..LOOKING AT THE GLASS HALF
FULL MOST OF MY LIFE...BUT AFTER WHAT I SAW YESTERDAY EXCEPT FOR THOSE
WAR TORN AREAS THAT HAVE NO FLOODING ANY LONGER....THE GREAT "QUEEN OF
THE SOUTH" HAS LEFT HER THROWN AND I'M AFRAID IT WILL BE MANY YEARS
BEFORE SHE IS ABLE TO RETURN...AND WHEN SHE DOES...AND SHE WILL
RETURN...SHE WON'T FIND THE BIG EASY "EASY" ANYMORE...I'M AFRAID ALL OF
THE CLASSIC ARCHITECTURE FROM PARTS OF UPTOWN THRU MID CITY AND BEYOND
(LAKEVIEW,THE 9TH WARD ETC. OF COURSE)THAT WAS HER BACKBONE CONTINUES
TO ROT UNDER THE WEIGHT AND STENCH OF RIVER OF DEBRIS AND TOXINS AND
GOD KNOWS WHAT ELSE...I CAN'T SAY FOR SURE...BUT I DON'T THINK IT'S A
FAR REACH TO SAY THAT WHEN THE WATERS DO RECEDE MANY OF THESE AREAS
WILL FACE THE WRATH OF BULLDOZERS COMING TO LEAVE RUBBLE IN THEIR
WAKE...AND WHAT WAS ONCE PROUD HOMES AND LIVES FOR 1000'S WILL BE
TRUNED INTO NEW LAYERS OF TOPSOIL TO RAISE THE CITY'S HEIGHTH ABOVE THE
SEA WALLS...SAD...SAD...SO SAD...AS BRANDO'S VOICE UTTERED IN THE FINAL
SCENE FROM "APOCALYPSE NOW"..."THE HORROR....THE HORROR"

Yes. It looks like a good story. I read it, but I can't post it
because it is all caps. People can't read all caps and I'm quite
concious of that partiular usability issue.

If I had the time to recase it, I would. I might try to run it
through an editor, maybe I have a script for that somewhere.

Could you find someway to make it lower case for me?

thanks alan, for tremendous assistance.i actually made it into orleans
thru all of the many checkpoints & road blocks yesterday w/the use of a
trumped up press pass & load of b.s. yesterday & got to mid city boat
landing even driving on interstate that's suppoed to be reserved for
emergency vehicles only..i didn't stop....after waiting for best
friends to contact get an area per rescue boat to me for hours i
finally managed to hitch a ride on a kind illinois state trooper's
motor boat...as i got to my house i found my doors smashed in leaving
house wide open..i searched & searched upturning furniture/opening
cubboards, etc.and still no "Ching" my beloved Siamese cat.I
meanwhile the waters in the are still 5-6 ft.deep plus all rescue boats
coming & going forcing water to rush further into homes 1st floors...i
was greatly disheartened and if it handn't ben for some oregon human
soc.guy who i passed on my way out along st.charles
telling me that he didn't think my cat would have escaped my house (2nd
flr) & jumped into water...he said that the human society or other pet
rescuers possibly did break in & rescued him..he told me to check with
Lamar Dixon Fairgrounds in Gonzales so i stopped there on my way
out...what a site for sore eyes..100's of dogs & cats & even birds
taken care of...though all had sad eyes...no sadder than their owners
who didn't know they were there...i walked thru the cat holding area
searching desperately but was unsuccessful...then they told me to try
the lsa agricultural center on lsu campus...so i made it thru the
unfathomable traffic jams that now beset Baton Rouge to the campus and
still no luckunfortunately i had a list of pets to rescue but pnly in
the mid city/city park area..but due to my ina bility to get the
necessary with the animal rescue people on boats i was unable to
fulfill my complete mission.i did manage to help a kind & grateful
woman get into orleans in uptown/garden district to retirve her cat
with great success and we even left food outside for the strays..
but it was\very dangerous motivating thru the streets what with all the
downed trees and power lines and nat.guardsmen roaming the streets with
rifles aimed at all the rooftops for snipers..yet most were very
cordial and didn't stop me when i showed them my press pass& told them
i was there to cover the pet rescue efforts in town...the city of new
orleans except for the downtown, garden district, parts of uptown &
french quarter are still under between 3- 10 feet of water......
while standing on the airline hwy overpass at the intersection of
carrolton & tulane i almost broke & cried...the city was deserted
except for the militia..and a steamy view of the downtown skyline, and
its reflection off the new canal that runs from where i was standing to
downtown and all points in between..i consider myself an optimistic man
always looking at the glass half full most of my life..but after what i
saw yesterday except for those war torn areas which have no flooding
anymore..the one great "Queen of the South" has forcible left her
throne & i'm afraid it will be many years before she able to
return..and when she is able she may not find the "big easy" "easy"
any longer...
i fear all of the classic architecture from parts of uptown thru mid
city & beyond to the plaquemans (lakeview, lakefron, 9th ward, etc. etc.
etc.)...which were a vital part of her backbone will be a shadow of
their past...as they now rot under the weight and stench of a river of
debris & toxins and God knows what else...i can't say for sure but i
don't think it's a far reach to say that that when the waters do recede
many of these areas will face the wrath of an army of bulldozers that
will leave piles of rubble in their wakeand what were once proud homes
filled with lives & memories for 100's of thousands will ne turned into
new layers of topsoil to raise the city's heighth above its sea
walls....sad..sad..so very sad...as brando's voice murnfully uttered in
the final scene from "apocallypse now"..."the horror...the horror".

Well stated!  I want to encourage you to get someone to go to your home again, or you go again.  I keep thinking how sure I was that Sammy was not in my home on Tuesday, but on Thursday, there he was.  Even on my trip from Baton Rouge to Atlanta, of which I just arrived, I lost him in the car and was sure that at a gas station when getting out of the car that he must have escaped.  But after a long search amongst the boxes I found him.  Don't give up hope yet.  I really believe he is there in your home still.  There is a lot of noise around him that he is unfamiliar with and scared to death.  I believe he is there!

Thank you for your help yesterday.  I feel so grateful to have my Sammy.
