Not sure about makerbots, but over in reprap-land we need 200 step/rev
(0.9 degree) motors that take ~1.5A, have a low voltage rating (1-3
volts) and as much torque as possible- 40N.cm or more.

The low voltage rating is necessary so that our smart current-mode
A4988 driver chips have plenty of voltage headroom to maintain current
at speed.

I've heard that makerbot are now using something very similar to the
A4988 breakout (commonly referred to as "pololus" in reprap-land) so
I'd expect similar specced motors to work well with recent makerbot
electronics.
