sooo... is there a way we can help save the comment history on
thingiverse before they are vaporized in October? a thingiverse web
scraper (available on thingiverse btw) may be a first step.

Can you post a screenshot of what you're talking about? I can't see that text on the two things I checked (my two published things). I'm viewing this logged in, from an iPhone (not that the iPhone bit should matter because there is no more iPhone view).

No need to panic. The third-party system that we currently use for
comments is going away, but we're working on the replacement.
We've been capturing "backups" of the comment data since the beginning just
in case something like this happened.
Our migration plan is to make sure that no comments are lost, and we'll try
to maintain as much of the comment threading, avatars, inline images, etc.
as possible.
Thanks,
Marty

I think it's up to the Thingiverse dev team to get a data export of all the comments and then figure out how to migrate them to a new platform or implement a system themselves. It would be a real shame to lose any of the comments as they are packed full of useful information in most cases and clarification of details.

A web scraper for Thingiverse would really help me out too! I'm working on an app which aims to provide a better user experience for naive users printing 3D designs on Makerbot-class machines, and to do it right I need tighter integration with Thingiverse. Since the Thingiverse API isn't yet rich enough for what I need, I'd be willing to take a stab at this and put its source code up on Thingiverse for all to use.
But Thingiverse's Terms of Use (www.thingiverse.com/legal/) at 3.3(b)(vi) would seem to prohibit this. Can a Thingiverse representative comment on this?
