I just find this whole conversation so sad. You should be able to
share what ever you want. If thingiverse got overrun with dildos and
guns it just shows the nature of the humans that populate it.
So how far are you willing to take the though police fun?
It's all been pretty tame till now, but are we also going to delete:
Lock picks
Offensive religious items (Like a smashable head of Alla)
Credit card skimmer covers
drug paraphernalia
Anti Makerbot items (such as a makerbot sucks key fob)
Personally offensive uploads (such as one of those 40+ heads Makerbot
scanned attached to the torso of the Adam statue)
This is a slipper slope your playing with here. If Thingiverse is not
going to be about free exchange of ideas maybe it's just a marketing
tool... which would be amazingly sad.

If thingiverse doesn't want to be universally accepting of things they should start a new site whose name reflects that. I've already suggested a few names.
Thingifascists Thinginazis Thingsfortots Thingsforjesus Utterlybenignthingsthatevokenoemotionwhatsoever.com wouldn be perfect!

sorry Spacexula... i agree with Marcus. Humans are not binary. Policies should not be either. Thingiverse has been sublime so far, but things can eventually get abused as we are seeing. Each thing deserves a fair shot at consideration for leaving on or being taken down.
I have full faith and confidence in the site operators to draw the line where they see fit, and they've done a great job in my view. Besides, slippery slope arguments aren't usually that convincing to me. AFAIK they don't plan to take an all or nothing approach.
besides, the frakking STL file format is offensive by itself. There, I said it.

Also we should delete gangsta bobbleheads just because I feel that the
word Gangsta relates to Gangs, drugs, guns and killing. But just
because I don't like these things does not mean that they should be
deleted. Others out there have no problem with them so all I do is
just skip over these items as should others do with weapons and other
things they don't like. Remember that just because we in the USA have
gun laws does not mean other countries have them too. This site is for
the world and not just for the USA. It is up the the up-loader to
decide what is good to up load for others. Now I just uploaded a STL
file for Brass Knuckles that look like the original set, Should I take
it down because someone will print it out and use them in a fight. NO
I will not because it is up to the individual not to use them. Plus if
someone really wanted them bad enough they will find or make them one
way or another. No with gun STLs I like to have them in my personal
library so I can resize them for smaller applications like shadow
boxes and props for my robots. Just because some might try to build
them to use them, so banning them now takes away from me to make them
in to a prop. Is this fair to me and others out there, I think not. I
just had to say my two cents and now I'm done. Thanks for
reading... :)

well drawing a line is their job actually since they pay to run the site and are legally responsible for what appears on it.
YouTube had to eventually draw the line and take down content that is offensive (e.g. they draw the line at nudity) or illegal (e.g. stuff that violates DMCA). how you feel about the US laws should not be communicated to the site operators, but to your local lawmaking representative.
you are free to operate your own site in or from whatever country you wish. but don't expect people that are on the legally accountable end of things to arbitrarily allow all things in all forms forever.
when 'abuses' happen, the reins have to be tightened. it's just the way it is when money and legalese are involved.

every time we have this discussion, the conclusion is that we should comply with laws, and then just provide some sort of filtering so people can see the stuff that interests them. we already have a system of tags and ratings in place, so we have the necessary data to start to filter or sort by relevance to individual users. its just a matter of finding someone with the time and expertise to implement this.

I don't think anyone is saying that they don't have the right to make that choice, we're saying that we're disappointed with the choices they are making and think that they should be making different choices.

ads on Thingiverse appear to be served by google ads
If you are getting self defense, gun listings, vibrators or slow
cooker
advertisements, then that is because Google Ad tracking has determined
you are interested in those things, and/or the page you are currently
looking at matches some prior interests. Thingiverse admins have
little
to do with the ad selection.
<troll bait>
for all the noise makers saying 'someone' should start an
alternative...
stfu and do it. Setup your own servers, design the site, spend your $
$
and be sure to reserve some for legal defense.

Yep the sad thing is that although I have been avoiding the weapons based posts, I am getting the weapons based advertising as well. Keep your eye on the advertising that is being delivered to you on other sites you visit. You will no doubt see a weapons theme on them as well (I was served a tazer ad on an audio forum earlier!). What it goes to show is that Google's algorithms are starting to class Thingiverse as a weapons based site. This is possibly because the weapons based stuff is raising the most debate. Google takes into account user interaction when gauging the subject matter of sites.
Sadly this means that external services such as content blockers will soon start to pick up on the trend as google rankings and search keywords are used in many other companies algorithms.
I am not predicting doom and gloom here, as long as the more mainstream content is bountiful the site will not be classed as an internet bad boy. But the effect will increase as more of the weapons stuff gets posted.
Just one more thing to consider for the Makerbot guys.

It would be unfortunate if school filters start blocking Thingiverse
because of this discussion theme. I think there is a lot of value in
the Thingiverse and Makerbot sites for students.
I support the idea of a moderation panel to decide on any potentially
controversial content. Transparency in that moderation would be good.
We should also keep in mind that this is a free service that is
offered by a for profit company.
First and Second Amendment concerns do no apply to the ways in which
Makerbot polices its' site. If they don't want it in their house,
that's fine. If you want to host the potentially controversial
objects, then you should go make your own competing venue on your own
dime.
That said, I think that Thingiverse is an excellent value and a great
community of clever people.
Thank you to all the people who make it work!
Chris Connors
This is already solved, with weaponverse, now it's DISCUSSING it that's a Thought-Crime? To hell with that! Is school filters block Thinghiverse, it only means Schools are run by the same Soviet-Stile morons that outlawed free speech outside the Left's Brainwash, because it may be "controversial"... What next? Securitarian tyranny? Yes, you can!

How correct and well put. That's all there is to it.
To quote the captain, "Why are we still talking about this?"
School filtering is mandated as part of federal funding of the
networks they use. There are rules that say the content must be
filtered. This may include public libraries, but I'm not sure. If I
recall correctly, this came down in the 90's, so it's supported by a
bipartisan tradition. Chances are that most people would not want
young kids exposed to some of the badness online.
Keeping Thingiverse on the good side of that net is worth working for.
