"Remove this crap!" Or maybe friendlier wording.
Button could work like a vote. Or just a notification to Admin of
something that should be removed.

Whats the point of the button?  To remove crap designs, to clear spam/dead
work, or to tell someone they need to work out the details a bit more
before it's ready for posting on thingi?

Flag seems like it would require definition, so why not just come up with a
obvious phrased button?

"Flag as worthless"?

It's sometimes hard to say what's worthless, tho. Maybe someone is
making a placeholder for a project they're developing. Granted they
should express that and bring something to the table for others to
collaborate with them.

Maybe "Flag as incomplete/inappropriate" would be more proper, tho a
little wordy.

"flag as private" so that it isn't deleted, just not public.  Maybe set it up so that if 5 people flag something as private, it goes private without thingiverse staff moderation.  Then it would take a gang of people who hate you to take your things out of public view. yeah! That sounds workable. :-\ ok maybe not.

I like seeing some of these things, despite the fact that current makerbot
products would have trouble printing them.

However, not all machines of today, and certainly not those of tomorrow,
would have trouble with these.

I'd still like an easy way to quickly label the level of machine needed to
print a thing.

Thingiverse is much more than a repository for designs that can be used for
3D printing. Some of my designs are for a 3D printer,  which I have,  but
other designs are for the lasercutter or other tools.

For example, this weekend I made this thing:
http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:20852 there are no printable parts
currently in this design.

At least one of my things uses no cnc machines:
http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:7829

I was able to upload a video of a recent iteration of a project, though
there doesn't seem to be a playeron the system. It might be neat to embed
videos.

This system is much larger than we 3D printing enthusiasts may realize.

I agree. But it seems to me "things" need to be able to be made by some
means. Many designs are an exercise in ego. "Hey mommy, look at me!"

On Flickr, there used to be a 'ban' on cg/screenshot images. There may even
have been a requirement that pictures be legit photos. Now, there is no
such ban, but rather a category that is visible when uploading.

Tags and their use will help. The good work will flow up in the
viewcounts/download stats. The ability to subscribe to particular users is
useful.

We technically have this with the tools section, which is largely ignored because there's not useful way to use it for filtering. Someone would just need to add a couple of other 3d printer types to the list, separate from the assumed reprap/makerbot-style printers.

It is ignored by readers because you can't filter on it, and ignored by
posters because they don't know any better.

I guess what I didn't say the first time is that I want an easy way for
_anyone_ to quickly label things with machine types...

all true statements, and you can tag other people's things, and search by those.  Not perfect, but workable in the face of an immutable thingiverse.

You mean like on youtube where people add all sorts of tags that are
at best tangentally related to their video just to get views?

I suppose you could get really crazy and let people vote on the tags...
You could end up with a rating, like, this thing is 60% good for cupcake,
80% good for replicator, etc...

Exactly. Community ratings are a great way to manage abuse. Like "hide ratings" on posts on popular community sites.

If I tagged something as "requires support" I'd not necessarily want the
owner notified.

If I wanted them notified, I'd tag it and then post a message suggesting
small changes they could make that would remove the support requirement,
and they'd be notified of the message posting.

My problem: I forget to click the follow button when I post a comment to
a thing, as it defaults to no follow.

Possible solution: Add a line to the email setting of the profile to
always follow messages and/or updates on things you commented on.

Another possibility: Add a pop up when you post asking if you want to be
notified of responses.

Thank you.
