My makerbot is on the way and I'm nesting. No two ways about it. I'm
clearing space trying to decide where I should put it when it arrives.
Honestly I don't know. I could clean off space on my office desk, but
maybe that would be too loud and interfere with my normal work? I
definitely have space in my garage, but it's uninsulated and maybe
that would be too cold half the year?

Put it on your desk. Think of it as a fish tank. Except that you make the fish. If you're doing a long print, it can just whir away and you can tend to the billable work. If you put it in another room, you will have to stop working to see what it's doing.

Find some place where it won't cause your significant other to develop a jealousy-based opinion of it. My wife does not enjoy being in the same room while it's operating.
Some relationship building and bonding might be in order to ensure domestic harmony.
Put it on your desk. You may find a better place later, but it will be handy while it's a new toy. Don't forget the spool. And growing storage for the things you make.

ok, first of all, you don't even HAVE ONE YET? Holy hell. This should be interesting. I can't even imagine what you're going to design once your well deserved prize shows up. :)
Second of all, I have mine out in the garage and it's no problem. I live in northern california, and while it's not sub zero temperatures here, it does get down to ~35ºF regularly and I really don't have problems printing. You can always enclose the sides of your replicator to help trap in the heat as it convects upward. If you're printing with PLA, and I'm a big fan of PLA, chances are good you won't have significant problems with the cold of your garage... depending on where you live. If you live in Antarctica, you might.

I live in Utah so the cold is a problem. I want to insulate my garage
one day which might help. People at work want me to set it up there,
another possibility.
I guess I should be pleased that I've managed to fake it so well so
far that you didn't know I didn't have one. Yeah, watch this space:
