I want to announce a Request for "3D Printing Material Testers"
I Also want to announce that taulman and Shakespeare Company, LLC have completed Development of 4 new Polyamides for 3D Printing and that "3D Printing" is specifically added to a Top U.S. Manufacturing MSDS When it comes to Nylon and Nylon extrusions, you can't do better than Shakespeare.
We are searching for a minimum of 60 material testers. There is absolutely no cost to testers. All material and components are free to those selected.

But thats more or less standard in such stuff.. If you invest in research
You want to have at least an advantage over the competition as long as the
product is not on the market yet..

Na, the NDA is fine. My problem is the chance of gumming up my printer real good for your tests. "No cost to the tester" except for time and effort. Maybe a lot of time. I appreciate what you're trying to do here but no thanks.

I'm interested, but asking testers to design and build their own custom extruder for the test. That's too much work for early access to 50' of nylon filament, at least for me.

I didn't see anything about having to build one's own custom
extruder.. I did note that an extruder capable of high temperatures
such as the arcol v4 is highly recommended though, and that a very
bitey hobbed bolt is required, not one of these ones with tiny little
M3 or M4 teeth which will simply slip over the surface of the
filament.
Good point, to be more precise, if you use 3mm filament now, you don't
need to build a completely custom extruder mechanism, just replace the
hobbed bolt with one that will work with nylon. I use 1.75mm filament,
so I'd need to build a new extruder. Not impossible, but it feels like
they're asking for us to do a lot of work for their benefit, and not
doing terribly much in return. I hope that they find a few takers, as
nylon is a pretty interesting option, but it's more work that it's
worth, at least for me.

Actually, you do have a point. We did modify the request for a change to the extruder (on the web site) after we initially posted the request. The intent was good, maybe not the request! The goal, of course, is a successful printing experience. I think that the lengths we went to in order to finally get all of the St Louis test machines to reliably push nylon resulted in the request for the slotted hobbs bolt. Kristin, the one who prints the bands and elastic belts, noted that by modifying the request, we could learn from other's "during" the test, in that someone may have a better idea.

I think the goal is good, but perhaps you can work a little on rewarding people who do the testing. There are lots of good examples on Kickstarter - publicly thank people by name on your web site, give out early adopter t-shirts, or give them a spool of the resulting filament, for example.

Thank you, Laird as this is an excellent idea. It's great to have this group as a source of feedback! The site has been changed to provide the "real" thanks we definitely need as you and others are correct in that there is real effort involved in helping us out. It now reads as it should have:
6. As an additional “Thank You” to all testers:
1. All testers will not just get a thank you on a list, but each tester will get a ¼ page panel on taulman3d.com with a photo and information about their nylon printing efforts and their “Personal 3D Printing Interests”.
This Include links to your efforts, photos, YouTube links and social links. Basically anything 3D Printing related except a storefront or advertisement.
2. Selected write-ups get a full page on taulman3d.com with a photo and information about their nylon printing efforts and their “Personal 3D Printing Interests”.
This Include links to your efforts, photos, YouTube links and social links. Basically anything 3D Printing related except a storefront or advertisement.
3. After the testing is complete, taulman3D will start a kickstarter project to raise funds for one of Shakespeare's monster extruders for a 3mm run. This amounts to “miles” of material.
With a “successful” taulman3D Material Kickstarter, “All” testers will receive a free full roll of 618 and a free full roll of 525 (not including shipping) for their help and support at the same time as the kickstarter supporters. Rolls are expected to be around 180 feet.
4. Each testers page or ¼ page will be added shortly after results come in and remain online regardless of the kickstarter outcome.

Exactly thats what makes it worth going the trouble of being a tester...
I would want it, I would need it... So why not test it...
Effort? No pain no gain... If you consider the effort many developers
bring up to push Project Reprap further, (Sound, EvdZ, Kliment, PrusaJr,
Nophead, myself, just to name some very few...) without any real monetary
benefit in return then I think this testing is not too much of an effort..
Mayeb the reprap developer group would be more appropriate fort hat kind of
search..

That's a good idea - reprap builders more likely to be using 3mm filament, which makes it much easier to test 3mm nylon. The new terms they emailed about also give potential testers more incentive to do the work, which is smart.

Random thought - maybe a delayed-release NDA? As an academic, I would do
that where an NDA is requested in this type of situation - e.g. agree to
inform the sponsor of your results and then give them 90 days (or
whatever period you agree on) before sharing with the rest of the world.
This lets them get a reasonable head start on things, but if it turns
out their product is crap or something they can't suppress that
information once the grace period runs out.

That sounds reasonable, although what I suspect would happen is they modify the formula and have great filament upon release but the initial test filament is crap. Then people who were testers would be on a mission to defame the company due to their experience with the test stuff. I've seen it happen in the forums for a multitude of different products. I personally have purchased products people claim to be junk on the forums and been very surprised by the quality afterwards but most consumers are easily swayed by public opinion.
Just my 2 cent opinion. :)
