So, some of the rub here is that, traditionally, pid files for the system in
/var/run/ are owned by root. This is not always the case, though.
Postgresql on Ubuntu runs under the postgres user and it's pid files under
/var/run are owned by postgres.
If it's any help, mongrel appears to create the pid files owned by the

Delaying the pid creation makes the most sense to me. I would think that
any files created by thin (be they pids, logs, etc.) should be created with
the user/group specified in the config. In other words, *all* actions taken
by thin should be executed as the user/group specified.
Curtis

hmm, that's an interesting issue. Either we delay the creation of the
pid file or you manually chown it.
I wonder if delaying the creation of the pid file after privileges are
dropped could cause any issue.

Any idea?

One scenario I could imagine is that sometimes you don't want to give
a root access to the person who will deploy the app.
Regards,
Adam

Can the deployment script run the restart process under sudo or as
root? It seems OK to me to have daemon processes run as an
unprivileged user but daemon processes be only controllable by root. I
don't admin linux boxes for a living, though, so I probably don't know
the best practices.
On Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 4:08 PM, Curtis Summers

Congrats on getting 1.0 out the door! I've been using thin for about
6 months now and have been really happy with it.

Not sure if this is technically a bug, but I'm having an issue with
the following use case:

1) I have a user/group specified in my config to run thin as an
unprivileged user.
