News in brief

VWG’s “Authors’ Campaign” is off to a great beginning

At the moment, 46 authors who have had books (in some cases, articles)
published about cosmopolitanism or globalizing democracy have joined
our new “Authors’ Campaign.” It took eight weeks to reach the stage
where all our authors were fully committed to a letter that is now
going out to tens of thousands of NGOs around the world. The truth is
that Vote World Government could not by itself make the online
referendum “go viral,” but with the credibility of all these authors
pooled, and with their collective request to NGOs to ask their staff
and supporters and directors and served communities to cast votes,
there is a chance that the online global referendum will take off. If
that happens, we will use those tens of millions or even hundreds of
millions of votes to pressure the UN to take a look at our draft
resolution (www.voteworldgovernment.org/draftUNresolution.pdf), which
calls on each UN Member State to hold a formal national referendum
using the common ballot as part of the global referendum. It has been
our strategy from the start to proceed this way, and now we will see
if our strategy will work. There is a new link on our VWG site,

Campaign, where anyone can see the list of authors, the media release
and the letter we are sending to thousands of NGOs over the signatures
of our 46 authors. And finally, let us welcome to the two authors who
are new to the Campaign: U.S. Senator (1969-1981) and presidential
candidate Mike Gravel, author of Citizen Power: A Mandate for Change,
and Raffaele Marchetti, author of Global Democracy: For and Against.

The lunatic fringe

The Authors’ Campaign has drawn ballistic fire from the lunatic
fringe, and in a strange way, perhaps that’s a good thing. There are
kooks and dunderheads in the world, and it is surely better to have
them as opponents than as pals. We’re deciding whether to respond to
their attacks or just ignore them. (A little controversy doesn’t hurt
sometimes.)

It seems the best they can do is the old “straw man” gambit, where
they misrepresent our position and then shoot down their own
misrepresented version of our proposal. They say that what we propose
must be some variation of the old one-world government concept, a
borderless world with a single, ultra-tyrannical government, dominated
by one of a dozen or so nasty groups or individuals—the Illuminati,
the banks, the Trilateral Commission, the Communists, Beelzebub (the
devil, or the AntiChrist), Wal-Mart, etc.—who will take away all our
freedoms, enslave the human race, implant microchips in our heads and
cull humanity from 6.5 billion to 500 million with a human-engineered
pandemic. Sheesh! Do these folks need more fibre in their diets or
what?!
