Hello everyone!

So, I am an owner of a Korg M1 1989 Keyboard. The other day, the
internal battery gave up the ghost. I successfully replaced it, but I
soon after discovered that all my patches were gone, leaving me with a
crappy cheesy piano sound.

I downloaded the SysEx Librarian program to help transfer a new patch
bank (SYX file) onto the keyboard via USB to MIDI. I am patched in the
MIDI in and out of the keyboard to the USB of my Mac, which is running
OS X. For those of you familiar with this program, I have set the
Destination to "USB2MIDI". I have tried "uploading" the file by
selecting it and hitting the play button. The program says it's
sending it, but I have not seen any changes in the keyboard bank. I
have tried lowering the transfer speed like the documentation
suggests, and I have switched the Show File Size from Abbreviated to
Full and back again.

I have also tried shutting down the keyboard, unplugging the MIDI, and
booting it just to see if it will respond when not connected to the
computer. This has also failed.

Since I have no keyboard programming experience, is there a wizard out
there who can help restore my keyboard kingdom?

First thought is that you haven't turned "receive sysex" on in the M1
menus. I don't know if it is on by default. here are the general steps
to do this

01. Unplug the M1 power chord.
02. Turn the M1 upside-down and remove the small phillips screws in
the bottom.
03. The battery housing is beneath and attached to the large middle
motherboard.
04. Carefully lift and tilt the motherboard up to expose the battery.
05. Push old battery down while pulling it out of the housing. Note
its orientation.
06. Insert the new CR-2032 battery in the same orientation back into
the housing.
07. Carefully replace the motherboard and screw the bottom plate back
in position.
08. Plug in and power on the M1. “Init Program” appears in the M1’s
display.
09. Set MIDI to “Enable”: GLOBAL, 5, +, UP, D, UP, F, UP, H, UP.
10. Set memory protects to “Off”: GLOBAL, 6, DOWN, +, B, DOWN, +, B,
DOWN.
11. Sysex transfer original factory sounds from the “Factory” backup
file.

Just be sure to include checking the sysex settings on the M1 and you
should be good to do it again via your librarian program. there are a
number of programs that would work to dump the sounds in if you find
your current software confusing or unhelpful. btw, there are many
sounds available for the m1 around the web, and checking them out
might help breathe some new life into an older keyboard. I always find
loading new sounds is a nice inspirational starting point with a
synth.

Thanks Paul!

But I am "all enabled and off" in the Global menu. I have gotten to
the point where I have transferred the first patch, but not any of the
following 98. Instead, the names are replaced with garbage. Silent
garbage. Which is beyond me why it would change at all if the MIDI
wasn't communicating correctly. I'm suspecting a bad SYX file. I'm
gonna start looking around.

Does anyone know of one?

I'm not sure if this is helpful to you or not, but this site carries
all of the original patches for the M1.

Hope this is easier than trying to import!

Thanks

http://www.synthzone.com/korg.htm

I'll provide that link for starters as it has so much other M1
information on it as well as links to patch banks. Some of the links
are broken, some work and have numerous patches on them. Not a bad
start.
