Dear Friends and Colleagues:
The holiday season is upon us, ending another year. Were you able to
accomplish this year everything you hoped to do? That's okay, I
wasn't able to get everything done either. However, I did get a
couple of projects off the ground.
One big accomplishment was the launch of The Write Stop, our new
on-line store. You will want to be ready to get your projects started
or completed after the holidays. The Write Stop offers newsletters
with information that should help make 2006 a banner year for you.
A second project recently started is a personal web log,
DianaHKirk.com. I'll be using it to explore a number of topics that
don't fit very well on The Writer's Place, or they are of personal
interest and I'd like to share my perspective on them.
We feature "Lady with a Secret" by Jane Theresa Edwards this time
around. In addition, there's an article called "Self-Publishing and
Book Quality" at The Writer's Place and Sophronia Scott's article,
"Effective Networking for Writers," at The Write Stuff. Ms. Scott's
advice is good for anyone in any field attending a conference or
networking event with peers.
I wish you all a fun and safe holiday season, and a very happy and
prosperous new year.
Thanks for your interest in the past. I look forward to working with
you again soon. Call me at 1-650-278-1278.
Sincerely,
Diana Kirk

* The Write Stop Now Open for Business
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------
We finally opened our on-line store, The Write Stop at
http://www.writestop.com. For years we collected information about
sources of funding for writers, professional researchers, and small
office and home office businesses for our clients who have requested
the information. In the past, we tried to put some of it up as a
service for visitors of The Write Stuff, our free resources site at
http://thewritersplace.com/writestuff. However, it was too much--too
many entries to put on a web site which needs to be devoted to a
variety of resources and too difficult to organize for easy
navigation of the separate sources, some more useful for researchers,
others writers would like. We found what we needed for our clients,
put on the web site what seemed like a few general, but good
opportunities, and tossed out a huge amount of work. This was
distressing.
Although The Write Stop was originally intended to provide on-line
tutorials and other materials for coaching adults in English language
skills and writing craft, it seemed the ideal place to develop
several additional services. We are starting with two newsletter
series and a personal computer security service.

* "Self-Publishing and Book Quality" at The Writer's Place
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------
Many people assume that the quality of a self-published book must be
inferior to a book produced by a New York publisher. I've even read
on some sites the amazing assertion that a self-published book cannot
be considered for a book award like the Pulitzer and that it won't
get the attention of reviewers. Others assume that if a book is
self-published, it is all right to cut corners and be unconcerned
about its appearance. As long as the words are all correctly spelled,
anything is fine. None of that is true.

* Featured Book: Jane Theresa Edwards, "Lady With a Secret: Based on
the Life Experiences of Louella Daigle"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------
In our continuing series featuring published books The Writer's Place
has worked on, we are happy to say that "Lady With A Secret" is still
available and doing well. Jane J. Robinson of Palo Alto penned this
review for Amazon.com on December 14, 2002, and I think it describes
the book very nicely.
"I'm generally skeptical about self-published family memoirs, but this
one is exceptional. It led me into the life of Louella Daigle, the
eldest daughter of a Creole Louisiana sharecropper. Born during the
depths of the depression, forced to forego an education in order to
help support the family, she overcame her illiteracy and led her
sisters and their husbands to California, where the newer generations
flourished. Her success story is told by a niece who renders it in a
way that lets the reader hear the subject's voice as well as the
voices of her extended family, including those of her parents and of
a wonderfully volatile character, Aunt Eula. A real page-turner."

* "Effective Networking for Writers" by Sophronia Scott

Tis the season for conferences and seminars! Many of my friends have
all been conference-hopping in recent weeks and we've been discussing
how fruitful these gatherings can be when you can make great and
lasting contacts. But how do you come away with something more
substantial than a stack of business cards? Here are a few tips to
keep in mind.

* "Use Radio Interviews to Promote Your Book or Business" at
DianaHKirk.com
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------
One of the things I've been meaning to write about is the radio
interview as a means of promoting one's book or business. Usually
when people think of promoting anything on the radio, they think of
media advertising. The radio interview is not that.
