Are competitors timed out when they arrive at the start of the abseil
and timed back in when they clip onto the rope prior to descending?
I’m thinking of the scenario here where a team arrives at the abseil
and there is a large backlog of competitors. It is probably best to
work it like this but I’m sure you have it covered. The scenario in
2006 where folk were timed out at the top of the abseil and then timed
back in at the bottom of the abseil (before getting back on the bikes)
was not fair in my opinion. It lent itself to teams taking extended
rests prior to the bike stage whilst not on “race time”

There will be no 'time out' at the abseil. If there is time, both
athletes in a team will be allowed to abseil (at the safety steward's
discretion, and provided that both members of the team have the
required gear). Otherwise, to keep things moving, only one member
will abseil and the other will trek down the side. There will be 2
lines running simultaneously, and the clock will stay on at all times.
