I was planning to write a long heartfelt post to this group after being away for so long. It was going to be charming and epic and it was going to win over the many of you who have lost faith in me and what I do. However, after setting such a lofty goal, that post never got written over the ages and I've been putting it off even after releasing The Hit List 1.0 for Mac.
Today, instead of trying to write that polished post, I want to begin with an apology. It's been too long since I last posted here. At the time I thought that it would be best to keep quiet and keep working towards the 1.0s. In retrospect, I should have done more to reassure people that I was still alive and working. I apologize for any worries this might have caused and thank you for still being here. I hope that you've all been well and that none of you have been adversely affected by any of the natural disasters or the financial and housing crisis of the recent years.
This group was started back in 2009 so it's just about two and a half years old now. It's good to see that many of the people who signed up back in 2009 are still here today in 2011. I appreciate the participation of every one of you here. You've all been extremely patient with my slow progress over the last year. Lots of you have sent me words of encouragement either in this group or via email. You have no idea how much that helped. When taking small steps toward the daunting goal of releasing the 1.0 of the Mac, iPhone, and a sync service to tie those two together all by myself, it truly felt like someone was giving me a knowing nod and a pat on the back to help me keep going.
Getting back to today, though, here is the current state of the apps. As you all know, The Hit List 1.0 for Mac was finally released on the last day of last month. I think I stayed up two nights that week to make the deadline so that you would not have to download another release that only extended the expiration date. It's all a blur to me now, but I somehow got through the next 48 hours without sleep fixing issues that were cropping up on Mac OS X 10.5. First, I had to bring back PowerPC support back because I had unwisely removed it. Then there were some library upgrade problems that happened because THL 1.0 did not get enough testing on 10.5. The problems only affected a fraction of 5% of you, but still, in my rush to get it done by June 1st, some of you had to put up with rather serious bugs. If you were affected, I'm very sorry that you had to put up with it. There were other bugs that affected Mac OS X 10.5 users, but with today's release of version 1.0.4, I think I've taken care of them.
The sync service, on the other hand, is turning out to be quite solid. It went through extensive testing and debugging, and so far, it seems to be working really well. Had I shipped everything back in January when I thought that my apps were just about ready, I would have spent the next few months going crazy about bugs and driving you crazy too. Thankfully, with the help of some amazing people in the closed beta those problems were fixed and the sync service received a lot of polish.
That bring us to the iPhone version of The Hit List. Many of you have been asking where it is and rightly so. Unfortunately, it's still in review. It was first submitted to the App Review team on April 15th to allow plenty of time for a May release, but due to various reasons that I would rather not talk about, it's still pending approval. I received the latest rejection on the 17th. It was not a problem that required any change in the app binary, though, so I'm hoping that it'll be approved shortly. However, from what I've experienced so far, it looks like it'll get either rejected or approved some time on or after the 24th.
I'm very thankful that a lot of you are patiently and eagerly awaiting the iPhone app's release, but please resist the temptation to ask me when it's being released because I do not know. I'll make sure that you hear about it when it is available on the App Store.
Because many of you purchased a subscription to the Sync Service expecting the iPhone app to ship in early June (as I did), you have not been able to use it to its full extent. To make sure that you didn't waste your money this June, whether it be $1.99 for a month or $19.99 for the year, I'll be extending everyone's subscription by a month sometime before the end of the month.
If you purchased The Hit List 1.0 through MacHeist you might have been wondering why you did not receive your code for the complimentary sync service subscription yet. I've been waiting to send those out because I only get one shot to send the mass mailing to you guys through MacHeist. I wanted to do it when the iPhone app came out because the sync service is a lot less useful without the iPhone app. If you have multiple Macs and want to use the sync service right now, though, you can now use your license key to receive receive your complimentary 3 months of sync service subscription. To do that, please enter your license key here:
People who pre-ordered directly and paid $49.95 got 1 year of subscription, but unfortunately, I was only able to offer 3 months to people who bought it from MacHeist. There are almost 90,000 of you, and at least at this point, I didn't want to worry about possibilities of server fees that put me in the red. I wish that I could just offer everything for free, but I do make my living from this so I hope that you'll find it to be reasonable.
Going forward, I have begun work on the iPad version of The Hit List. I'm guessing that it'll be done sometime near the end of summer around August or September. I usually don't even hint when something will be done because I'm so terrible at predicting release dates, but this time, I'm going to try my best to stay within that time frame. The really hard part is done, not to say the rest of it will be easy, but I think it's doable if I curve my ambitions somewhat.
iCloud support is something I still haven't decided on yet because I haven't played with it enough. I am very much hoping that THL will be able to make use it, though. Encryption is something else I'm looking into but it probably won't be added anytime before the 2.0s. It's something I want to get absolutely right or not do at all. The worst thing would be to give you a false sense of security. I am going to apply for an encryption export license soon, though, so that I don't end up waiting for that later.
What will version 2.0 be about? When I originally mapped out THL development, version 2.0 was all about collaboration. I'd like to sneak in a web app there too, but we'll have to see about that now. iCloud has really clouded up my vision for the web version.
On a more near horizon, I'd like to finally fix the annoying split view problems. I know that some of you have figured out how to hide the sidebar during the beta despite my best efforts to hide that feature. It's something I want get right once and for all in the 1.1 release or sooner. It's just one among many of the things I couldn't get done for the 1.0; another is a better way to link an email to a task. The drag and drop method from Mail.app is rather cumbersome and also buggy due to a bug in Mail.app.
Finally, I'm beginning to admit that I can't do everything by myself and be happy with the results or not take forever to get it done. First, I would like to see if someone else can design a new kick ass website for The Hit List and possibly also for Potion Factory. If you're interested, please email me a link to your work.
Thanks for the heartfelt message Andy. It is truly much appreciated.
Is it possible to get some screenshots of the iPhone app please :) ?
We are all DIEING to see what it looks like. It wouldn't do you any
hard to show some screenshots of what sub-tasks look like, what
editing a task looks like, etc... We are all surely still going to buy
the iPhone app whether we see screenshots now or not, but it would be
nice to see what we have all been waiting for for years.

Great to hear that you are doing well, Andy. But let us all remember that when it comes to programming, 80% of the tasks usually take 20% of the time and the remaining 20% take another whooping 80% ;-) - and that this is a general rule that there is nothing to do about.
Sincere best regards,
Kim
P.S. I can't wait to get my hands on the iPhone version!
> Going forward, I have begun work on the iPad version of The Hit List. I'm guessing that it'll be done sometime near the end of summer around August or September.
i'm not sure why your surmised that i was referring to a demo version,
when i said "evaluate." by evaluate i meant that i wanted to purchase

not a problem :). partly my fault for the way i stated it. but i
wanted to make sure that no one else could mistakenly infer that i was
getting a "demo" version and have poor andy bombarded with messages.
are you waiting for the iphone version as well?

I am fortunate to be on the beta team and have been testing it on my iPhone and iPad and a happy camper with it. Can't wait to see it approved and Andy fully concentrated on the iPad app.

Thanks for finally letting us know what's going on. I know what it can
be like to intend to do something and then suddenly a year has gone by
because you can't psychologically jump some hurdle your self-errected
(remember, break your tasks down into small achievable actions!). All
I ask is that you keep this communication channel open. As much as I
have wanted recommend THL to people (including my boss) I haven't been
able to because the lack of communication made me think the whole
thing might go belly up. Perhaps you might consider something like
this? http://culturedcode.com/status/ - although timely Tweets will
satisfy me.
I'm really glad to hear collaboration is high on your agenda. This is
the one thing making me sniff around other options at the moment.
I've bought the MacHeist bundle back in the day specifically because
of THL and even though I've lost faith in it (yes, I have to admit
it), I always came back to it because you just designed the best
frakking user interface for a task management app.
Thank you too for letting us MacHeisters test the sync service, I've
been looking forward to this a lot and I'll keep my fingers crossed
that the iPhone version will be approved soon.
All the best to you and I hope you'll find some people who can support
you not just with the redesign of your website but also with the
development so not everything is on your shoulders.

Thanks for posting, Andy! We were really waiting for your words, and I
think that many of us understand what you were going through. I'm a
developer too, I know how things can get nasty sometimes.
I think a lot of us didn't give up because The Hit List because it is
the best! I tried to use other apps, but I always went back to The Hit
List. Just keep doing your best!
I can't wait to get The Hit List for iPhone, I search for it every day
on the App Store!
And how can we volunteer for beta testing the iPad App?! I want it so
badly =)

It's great to hear that you're still alive and motivated after what
must have been an unimaginably tough couple of years working on this
project. I'm glad I stuck around and I'm absolutely sure having used
the Mac version for a couple of weeks that the iPhone app will be
worth the wait.
Thanks for everything and please keep talking to us!

Sincerely I'm still using the Hit List, but I'll test other solutions
for Mac and iOS. There are too many things I don't like in your
development:
- almost 2 years without news and real update, no communication at all
with costumers
- iPhone version of application useless without online sync because
there isn't a directly/wifi sync. Or maybe you plane to introduce it?
- I understand that the sync service need to have a subscription, but
I really hate that nowhere in the app you wrote it. Even before
subscribing there isn't any info about fees.
Andy, you're not the only one with communication issues (looking at
you cultured code) and so I appreciate your heartfelt post. That said,
frequent tweets and/or blog posts will go along way to helping us stay
THL users and stuck sustain your business. Getting things right the
first time is a great goal but let us know when problems develop or
maybe that you're working on a new killer feature. I am more
concerned about the sporadic communication than I am the slow 1.0
development pace. Communication has been talked about more than actual
THL features and that has surely damaged the market for THL. The
response to 1.0 and mass impatience for the iphone app show THL has a
passionate userbase - employ us to expand/improve THL.
Keep doing what you're doing, ask for help, hire help, and talk to us
and THL will be a success. THL is your baby, but the market for todo/
gtd apps has matured to the point you may want to gather user feedback
for possible roadmap tweaks.
