Hi all, I've been following along on Andy's progress for some time
now. I got THL in a Macheist bundle and loved it, but when I got my
iPhone and started university it became time for me to get some form
of task syncing. While the Wifi sync is far from perfect it works. Now
that THL 1.0 is out as is the iPhone app, someone give me some
compelling reasons to switch back from things. Cloud sync is great but
is it something worth paying for. FYI I use Things right now to keep
track of all my class assignments as well as various other tasks. I
use paper planner while I'm in class and transfer things over at the
end of the day. I love Things' repeating tasks and use them all the
time for assignments that I know will be due every week. I'm just
looking for the absolute perfect productivity solution and it could be
THL, so help me out. Thanks

Brad, I'm using THL for university as well. With university wifi pretty much everywhere, syncing isn't an issue at all. It works fairly well. Also THL has repeating tasks.
Whether or not its perfect for you will depend on your specific needs. I personally feel that for $20 a year, the sync is fabulous. I'm not comparing to what other cloud services charge (ie dropbox). Compare it in terms of value and you'll see that $20 for an entire year isn't much, even for us students.

Okay so aside from the cloud sync which I'll get for 3 months free
anyways, what does THL do extremely well that Things just doesn't. I
don't need the long notes, my assignments are just tasks so I don't
need iStudiez although it is an absolutely beautiful app.

It shines when it comes to adding stuff via keyboard and filing via it. One thing as an example: to assign a contextual tag or other tag to a task you do not need to click and activate the task, simply selecting it and then writing /name or @name will add the tag. Or hit F and file into the needed folder with the most currently one popping up first or create a new one on the fly and file it into it. Sync is blazingly fast. There are some really good Applescripts around to tie it in with Mail or Safari etc and even an applet on iOS Safari to add it there. I like it's looks but most of all, it does not get into my way such as Omnifocus does. Omnifocus shines in the fact that you can style its visual look on the desktop and it has a rally thought through and user friendly iPad version, hands-off the best iPad GTD manager I have seen so far. Things has a nicer way of handling repeating tasks in my opinion, but that is the only place where I give it more points.
I am sure there is more to say, but typing on my iPad via VNC is not so much fun, so I'll stop here :)

I agree with Marlyse 100%. THL is very snappy and lets you minimize the time and effort you spend on managing items. As far as I know, THL has most of the functionality present in Things, but I feel that its more efficient.
Brad, the biggest hurdle is probably not the cost, but moving your entire workflow over from one application to another. But until you do that and test out THL for a day or two, our points might not seem convincing.
THL shines in its user experience, and you have to use it to see why.

I posted something like this last week. Having bought things and
invested into the workflow I hesitated to pay again and switch my
workflow. I bought the iphone THL app and paid for a month of sync to
try the desktop demo on trial. Just a few days into the trial it's
pretty clear that switching is worth it.
Really, the money isn't such a big deal (though maybe a bigger deal
for a college student) but the biggest deal is the time to study the
new paradigm and UI of THL. Some things are really a different
mindset, so there is some time involved, maybe more precious than the
money.
But in the end, you may well see that it works better for you. I guess
for an app like this, you want it to be effective, and you want it to
be something you'll use. I'm finding with THL that it is more
effective, and I'm using it more and better. Worth switching for me.
I have not used Things in a long time so I don't know what
improvements they've made since the latest version that I have
(1.4.3), which is what I'm using for comparison.
Why THL is better:
- THL lets you set a START date in addition to a DUE date. Things only
has DUE date (like most to-do apps). That's a big plus for THL for me
right there.
- THL's Today view shows you what's due today, in the next 3 days,
what's started but not due, etc. Things just groups all the tasks
together.
- THL lets you create Smart Folders so you can filter your tasks and
save those filters. E.g., you can create a Smart Folder for each
course if you want.
- THL lets you enter labels very quickly by just typing a / for a tag
or @ for a context. This should come in very handy when you're
transferring tasks from paper to computer.
- THL lets you make subtasks very easily (and quickly). In Things I
believe only Projects can have subtasks.
If you use contexts and tags, your tasks may look something like this:
Write 6-page paper about Thoreau. @school /english | START: Today |
DUE: July 20
Study for Chapter 7 exam. @school /biology | START: Tomorrow | DUE:
Tomorrow
Buy birthday gift for girlfriend. @outside /errand | START: Tomorrow |
DUE: July 15
Call Mom. @home /errand | START: July 16 | DUE: none
Personally I use only contexts and tags and don't use lists, and just
dump everything in the Inbox. I've written about it here (http://
moomoohere.com/blog/view/best_way_to_use_the_hit_list) if anyone's
interested.
Whilst I would say stick with what you are comfortable with I have to
also mention that a couple of months ago I got pissed off waiting. I
even knew that the ¡Phone app had been submitting. I just couldn't
take it all anymore. I moved all of my many many tasks over to Things
& invested time & money into that instead of The Hit List which I was
totally in love with & used almost daily up until that point. I think
the monthly beta upgrades really dragged me down. Anyway. I used
Things & it's ok(ish) it works, it does the job. The sync however
really pissed me off. Something it just wouldn't even work when I had
my MacBook open with the ¡Phone & ¡Pad right next to them. I bit the
bullet & paid the £5.99 for THL ¡Phone, restarted my old & now clean
instal of The Hit List & I promise you, I was genuinely shocked at how
well the sync worked. I'm using the 3 month trial at the moment but
damn! It's good. The ¡Phone app is so much better than the Things one.
Things on the Mac & ¡Phone look so dated now.
Again though, stick with Things if it works for you. If not then I
highly recommend going back to THL.

Though I'm switching from Things to THL without much regret, one thing
-- there is one thing -- that Things does better: creating a task from
an email or web page. Similar functionality is available through an
applescript to create a link to the email or web page, but even with
that you have to then go to THL to tag and date and describe the
task.
Andy, please think about adding this as a built in -- to be able to
add a task from anywhere, and the task will be linked to the context.
And while you're adding it from a modal window, you can describe and
tag it.

Can't something similar be done via contextual menus already?
Select text
ctrl-click on selected text
choose "Services -> New Task from Selection" from contextual menu
THL quickentry window pops, populated with your selected text, and
ready to enter tags, dates, notes, priority, etc.
...Or am I misunderstanding your need/intention?

Awesome, it worked for me too. Thanks folks; this is helpful. A lot
of the posts lately have been very helpful; the tips and suggestions
really make a difference!
