In addition to selling soil-filled eggs and eggs with artifically dyed
yolks, some devious manufacturers are synthesizing their own "eggs":

"The chemicals used in synthesizing the faked eggs include baifan
(alumen), gelatine, lactone, carboxymethyl cellulose, calcium choride,
sodium alga acid, sodium benzoate, lysine, paraffin wax, calcium
carbide, gypsum powder and so on (chart 1). Although the chemicals
used are not severely toxic, some of them post some long-term health
risks when consumed or overdosed (  2  ,  3  ). For example, baifan
(alumen) has been linked to Alzhmer's disease if consumed for a
prolonged period of time (  2  ). Exposure to calcium carbide by faked
egg producers due to carelessness can cause immediate irritation to
the eyes and skin in the short term, while lung-irritation related
bronchitis might arise in the long run (  13  )."

That is awesome! No wonder I felt sick in China when I wasn't drunk.

"The Internet Journal of Toxicology?"  Really?

That piece alone blew my mind, not to mention the subissues of how you
came across this tidbit of enlightenment, ... and all that before I
even begin to consider the alumen implications.

Alzheimer's?  Bronchitis?  Yeesh.  The cholesterol-induced heart
attacks that accompany a daily breakfast of fried eggs suddenly seem
relatively benign.

Its not like I'm trolling esoteric science journals. I got this, and a
few other posts, from megnut (http://www.megnut.com/), which is a
really great food blog.  She has a newer post about peruvian frog-
juice (http://www.megnut.com/2007/05/steaming-beer-mugs-of-frog-juice-
for-sale-in-peru)  but I don't think its as cool as salamander brandy
(http://www.grailtrail.ndo.co.uk/Grails/brandy.html).
