Charity Valentine is the eternal optimist. While working at the seedy Fandango ballroom, she is often taken advantage of and continually experiences bad relationships. Finally, she seems to have met a decent fellow in Oscar. Trying to hide her true profession, she lies to him and tells her that she works in a bank. As Charity continues to remain hopeful that good things will happen in her life, will her relationship with Oscar work out?

EXPECTATION and PREPARATION:

Auditions will be an open call both days, and will consist of singing a prepared 32 bar selection of a musical theatre or pop/rock song in the style of the show.

Please Provide: Sheet Music...no CDs & NO ACAPPELLA auditions...Headshot or School Photo / Resume (if available)

Invited Callbacks will be held on Wednesday, November 9th from 6:00pm - 9:00pm. If you are auditioning, please make sure to clear your schedule that evening, as callbacks are critical to putting together the strongest ensemble for the show.

Rehearsals will begin on Wednesday, November 9th.

Typical weekly rehearsal schedule will by Sunday through Thursday nights from 7 - 10pm. Conflicts with the rehearsal schedule must be kept to an absolute minimum during the rehearsal process. No conflicts will be accepted during dress / tech week (1/2 - 1/5)

SYNOPSIS:

STRIKING 12 - On New Year's Eve, an over-worked and under-inspired single guy who's had enough of holiday cheer makes a resolution: to stay home and go to bed early. On another New Year's Eve, a continent away - and more than a century earlier - Hans Christian Andersen's Little Match Girl tries unsuccessfully to sell her matches in the snow. The two stories are brought together when a young woman selling special "full- spectrum holiday light bulbs" to combat Seasonal Affective Disorder shows up at the grumpy man's door. Though the man (who probably could use the bulbs) seems to enjoy the young woman's company, he sends her away. It's not until he reads "The Little Match Girl" that he is finally pulled out of his funk. All of this unfolds through a tuneful pop/rock/jazz score that retains the vibrant style of its original performers: the celebrated band, GrooveLily.

THE GIRL WHO WAS PLUGGED IN - A homeless bag-lady whose soul is transplanted into the body of a gorgeous female android by a company which manufactures celebrities. The show is a one-act musical containing a curious mix of a science fiction framework around traditional themes - the generation gap, a love triangle and the archetypal conflict between those who have power and those who have.

Mark Gilman - 2011 Pinnacle Award Honoree

Each year, honorees are acknowledged because they demonstrate excellence in their professional fields or philanthropic pursuits in your community.

Excellence in the Arts

Presented to an individual whose work as either a visual or performance artist or writer has had a significant influence on the cultural well-being of our community.

Mr. Gilman was nominated by Barn Board President, Vida Bikales. Mark has been a friend to The Barn for many years. He has been on our stage, on our board and has donated his printing services. Mr. Gilman has worked tirelessly to promote the arts throughout Kansas City and is richly deserving of this award.

MARK GILMAN, Mission Hills, Kan.

For more than 40 years Mark has been instrumental developing the capabilities of arts organizations throughout the metro, serving on the Board of The Barn Players, Missouri Repertory Theater (now Kansas City Rep), Arts Council of Johnson County, Arts Advisory Committee at Johnson County Community College, and Kansas Arts Commission. Gilman has directed productions and acted on stage, and has even provided pro bono printing services to local high school theaters. The 2002 Volunteer Center of Johnson County's Volunteer of the Year, Gilman is currently a member of the JCCC Foundation Board and Shawnee Mission Medical Center Foundation Board. Gilman is Chairman of the Board of Gill Studios.
