Can the "find" function in Text Wrangler automatically highlight all
instances?

When I click "find all" some cray screen pops up that I don't
understand how to use.

How come it doesn't just HIGHLIGHT all the instances of the searched
for text?

thanks!

Yes, it can.
Try the "Live Search" function in the Search menu.

You're using an older version of TextWrangler; 4.0 and later
have Live Search in the Search menu.
