I was misremembering, sorry - it isn't broken from the Cygwin console, which is a console subsystem window running bash.exe. Microsoft telnet, and seemingly ftp, is just broken in Windows subsystem applications. The existing Faq item, for telnet, is:

If Microsoft ftp is anything like as limited as Microsoft telnet, then you'd be doing yourself a favor by installing the Cygwin version. Never having used either ftp, mind, I can't say more.
On quitting groovysh:

So the window goes blank and the menus etc stop responding? If not, then it's unlikely to be Terminator that has stopped working. Perhaps choosing Reset from the right-click menu would sort things out. Perhaps "stty sane" is needed.

My path was /cygdrive/c/directory -- using windows ftp and not cygwin ftp.
However, ftp worked from the Cygwin console , but not from Terminator
Console.
When I enter env - the path vars and paths are the same in both Cygwin
Console and Terminator Console.
One other thing when I was playing.
groovysh (which is a windows install -not cygwin) will run in Terminator
but when using - quit - Terminator stops working.
groovysh - Groovy console like - python or irb
