I just installed Cygwin today, together with a few recommended packages like ruby. I then installed Terminator. I started up cygwin then double clicked the Terminator shortcut on the desktop and it eventually opened but then immediately froze, nothing worked including the drop down menus so I had to click the X  to get rid of it.  I also tried starting it from Cygwin by typing   Terminator, it started up but froze again.
I am using XP (sp2)
.

Impressively, I see you've found and tried and had no luck with the rebase trick, so I imagine you're now trying Cygwin 1.7.7, per the instructions in eg:

http://groups.google.com/group/terminator-users/browse_thread/thread/5b4e514602f795bd/7e68cc7c8ac306e2?lnk=gst&q=fruitbat#7e68cc7c8ac306e2

I think that's worked for everyone who's managed to jump through the setup -X hoop and the "fruitbat is slow" hoop.

(So I just reply to thank you for the report and to wish you luck, and to make it clear that you're not being ignored.)

I cant really make heads nor tails of that thread so have no idea how
to get ver 1.77 installed.
I cant understand why it wasn't clearly stated on the website of
terminator that it often doesnt work with the latest cygwin!? If I
had known I wouldn't have installed cygwin at all or at least the
latest version.

I dont understand, on the website of terminator it has no mention of
any problems! and it tells you about cygwin and where to download it
etc and again no mention of what versions work well together or any
compatability problem!!

I don't blame you for frustration. To put things in context this is a
relatively recent problem (well, months old now, sigh) and it is due
to a change in Cygwin that is outside of Terminator's control. I
think the hope has been that this will get fixed in Cygwin fairly
quickly and then life will resume as normal. Unfortunately the
"fairly quickly" part of that probably doesn't hold any more so we
probably need to move to the next phase of dealing with this (whatever
that is; I think we're getting through shock and denial and perhaps we
might enter pain and guilt soon? Or maybe anger ;-) ).

Anyway, fwiw, it's really not that complicated. Just download Cygwin
setup.exe, DON'T double click on it to run it. Since you're on XP and
assuming you're an Administrator just open a command prompt (a Cygwin
one if you like) and change directory to the place where your
setup.exe downloaded and run it something like so:

./cygwin.exe -X

Once it runs and you click through the first screens to get to the
"Choose a Download Site", paste
the following into the User URL box:

ftp://www.fruitbat.org/pub/cygwin/circa/2011/02/20/102009/index.html

Click the Add button and make sure ftp://www.fruitbat.org is selected
as the Download Site (can't remember if that is automatic). Then
continue as normal (but slower). If you installed a newer release
then you might get some warnings about downgrading ... for me an in
place downgrade worked just fine, though that was a little while ago.
You can always blow your cygwin away and install it new.

Hope this helps!

Oh well the latest is I tried out Console2 and it works fine with
cygwin. It was easy to set it up so that one tab uses cmd and one tab
uses cygwin!
