Dear Ravi Vyzasatya ji,

I need few more details on this. Can you exactly define what you expect? You said it should not be a copy to any other font... means? One more request is... If you want a good font it requires more time. Also my request and suggestion iis increase prize money (Don't misunderstand it). Please reply me ASAP.

Regards,
Ambarisha Darbha

Hi Ambarisha,

you can call me ravi and that should be ok.

there are a bunch of propritery encoding fonts for telugu but we have
only couple of free unicode fonts in telugu..pothana and vemana ( as
far as i know)

so we want to offer some more variety..and we will release them into
public domain.. copying glyphs from any other existing fonts would
lead to copyright infringement.. hence the glyphs need to be original.

the easiest way to make a unicode compatible font is to take an
existing propriatery font and remap the glyphs to unicode..but most,
if not all these fonts for proprietery encodings like eenadu, vaartha
are copyrighted..so we cannot take this route..

i have no idea how much time a good font would take to make it from
scratch. if you have any expertise in this area you can suggest the
time frame and we are willing to be flexible with that..

If increasing the prize money is going to attract more people then we
can explore that option too..

hope that helps
Ravi

Dear Ravi,

To develop a font from scratch means artist has to write lettering then converting them into glyphs etc., Fine tuning of character shape, alignment and other things will take more time. The otherway is how maximum English fonts come. Take an existing Glyph and modify them as per your creative idea and make it look different. That process doesn't take much time. (month is enough in this way). Completely original font needs two to three months as per my knowledge. I would like to ask few more details. This font you are looking at can be text font or fancy heading font? Internal mapping should match Pothana?

Hey Ambarisha,

Good to know that you have some knowledge of the process...
For the competition we dont mind if it is a text font or heading font
but we would like a text font more than a fancy font.
As long as it is a unicode font and renders well..we dont care about
the internal mapping and also it should be without any copyright
hassles.
If it will takes 2-3 months I will move the deadline to June 20th
2007.

Hi Ambarish,

If you can just e-mail me
*your contact adress/e-mail
*how many people will be involved in the making of font and their
names?
*a brief technical background of the people involved..

that should be enough

Thanks
Ravi

Hi Ambarish,

Well as of now you are the only sole participant that I know of..dont
know if someone working without my knowledge..
Of the prize money..I am yet to discuss with other contributers.. off
the net.
I think ..even if we can just get this font out..that's worth it..you
would have made a great contribution to online telugu community.

Thanks
Ravi

Thank you Ravi,
I know about the  contribution to telugu community. That's the thought that made me come  forward. Anyway thank you for the opportunity created. This kind of initiation helps/encourages people to do something (not for prize money) to the community. If anybody helps me in writing an application in Mac OSX I can create fonts for it also (Free).

What kind of application? dont know much about mac...but I use it a
lot...
Nick shanks modified pothana to work on mac and it work's well. what
would be good idea is an IME (Input method...if thats what they call
on mac too) for mac..
I am in fact thinking of taking the issue up with him again..
And of course another telugu font for mac wouldn't hurt.

Dear Ravi,
I checked Nickshanks website. The input method file is meant for Kannada. I asked Nickshanks previously. I  think he is not interested in telugu keyboard. regular XML base keyboard file has problems in OSX. Whenever Apple is updating It's OS it's not working/Working. It's on and off. I want a dedicatted application based input method which should show characters perfectly in mac. One more problem in mac is it supports ISO8859 -1 code system (Latin). Not other codes. Pothana font is not showing characters properly in OSX. I asked Apple India people about it and they haven't shown any interest in it. Still I want to develope fonts on OSX. I am also a mac user. I want someone to support with UNIX programming.

Ambarisha Darbha
