adjusting the spacing between characters in a proportional font,
usually to achieve a visually pleasing result. Kerning adjusts the
space between individual letter forms, while tracking adjusts spacing

kerning is actually a german word. root being kern which means core. apart from English the word is used as it is in russian also.
