I have been using EVDO for awhile, today was the only day when I had low signals that was for couple of minutes, that's more then excepable for me. However, for about a month or so, it's been running smooth.  256 kbps what i'm getting all the time. Covering pretty much all around the Karachi, I live in far end of North Nazimabad, worked perfect, a friend of mine using in New Karachi, no issues there as well.

Device is slight expensive but I guess it's worthed.

The info available on this forum then boils down to these

EVDO 60 Orders per day in Karachi
Mobilink+Wateen 50-100 orders per day in Karachi
LINKdotNet 100 Activations per day Countrywide

How about Maxcom and PTCL? what is their share specially in karachi?
Any one?

Waiting for your input

thanks

This analysis is really amazing. I think you must consider the current financial crisis as well where people dont have enough money to buy food for their survival.

Aparently consumer spending in Pakistan is yet to take a full blown hit ( especially for those segments that are the target markets for these products) by these two factors ie Financial Crisis (Global + Local) and Inflation.

If you have an interest in economics or finance you can read this article that appeared in the The Daily DAWN

More Realistic figures (Karachi only):

Worldcall EVDO -- 25/day
Wateen Wimax -- 20/day
Mobilink Wimax -- 125/day
PTCL DSL -- 25/day
Linkdotnet DSL -- 20/day

Furthermore, keeping in view service of EVDO & Infinity are only
available in Karachi. On the other hand, they have the advantage of
independency from any 3rd party medium as LDN don't hv.
Service level is excellent for Infinity, EVDO & LDN but should not
forget the factor of more customer / bad service.Picture would be more
cleared once they will be at optimum utilization of core.

I really don't understand the economic crisis, I see a pathan walking down the street with that garbage bag and holding a Nokia 3310, let not even talk about the once on cycle some of them even have a better  Cellphone then I do  :S

However; back to the original topic, can anyone compare this services as I haven't heard any complain so far for EVDO. If it is so good why would anyone go for anything else even if it's mobilink infinity, you can move around the building but can't take if around the city.

I think Mobility / Cell hopping   is  not allowed by  PTA and  whether it is wateen / Mobilink infinity or  EVDO  you cannot  take it around the city ( i mean mobility). So far every thing is  802.16 d which means  fixed and nomadic.

I think this is stricted to WLL Voice operators as authority do not
allow WLL operator to use HO/TO on the network but its is limited to
Voice only but you can use Data everwhere in a city and also roam to
other cities (Telecom region where WLL have license). I know Telecard
PCMCIA card gave roaming in 5 cities, I am talking about two years
back. So no restriction of territories on Data but for Voice its
single Cell Mobility.

well why you have heard any complain for EVDO because its not launched yet. Stay tuned it will be launched soon in all major cities. Once umbrella coverage is there then you can take it everywhere while connected. i have used it for a while and its cool. my advise STAY TUNED soon you will hear it, lets hope no compalin about the services.

Also for VoIP there are no issues in nomadicity - I think its about
time to have one converged licence, its childish to trying caping
technology although it makes perfect sense for cellular coompanies

I thought the way there were implementing the "fixed" part is by not handing over on the fly to other cells, but if you "stop" and connect to any one cell anywhere that works - i.e you can take your wateen box anywhere in the region, likewise with the Mobilink Infinity box.

I think the spirit of the law is that these boxes should only work within designated areas, but they seem to work everywhere...

As per my information, Wateen & Infinity are on 802.16e.Furthermore as
per PTA law, You can move the data around anywhere but not along with
voice.
I think, more concern should be shown about blanket coverage & service
of two true IP/Data Giants(Wateen & Infinity). ..........?????

As far as my information is concerned and with some discussion with a Team lead of Alcatel Wimax Team (who worked for Mobilink Infinity), everybody is using equipment of 802.16e and the license of 802.16d, because of the  eye watering price of .16e license.

So you can still roam but so called 'hand-off' wont be supported, so any established session would break but after a while the CPE will synch itself with the new BTS in range.

D

What does the wireless mean??? What is the use of a wireless service when it doesnot support mobility??? Wireless is meant to provide support for every subscriber, everywhere. It is meant to provide support for mobile employees, mobile applications etc. It is worthwhile when I can stay connected on Skype, 24 hours a day. It is cost-effective when it helps me to find my way through google maps when I am away from my hometown. It means to me when I am alerted for every new email in my inbox!

If someone says that we can roam with wimax with such a huge CPE then it is called "Portable" not mobile! EVDO is a good initiative towards mobility, because the WLL is metro-level and hand off problem starts after huge distances. In-fact, wimax is not much as it is said! Internationally, wimax has not found much success as by the FTTH.

If I am not wrong, wimax is less expensive at the service provider side than FTTH. Thats why, these market players present wimax as the final solution to the broadband.

I salute Micronet Broadband, which not only brought broadband to Pakistan through their DSL service in 2002, but have also proved themselve by bringing FTTH to Pakistan in the name of NAYATEL.

Don't waste your time with "STATIC WIMAX", just go for DSL, EVDO or the Broadband Leader- The FTTH (If you are lucky enough to reside in Islamabad -as NAYATEL FTTH is only available in Islamabad)

Thank your everyone for your valuable input. Since Mobilink looks to
be taking the lead in Karachi with lets say 50-100 connections per
day, this has to be backed by well established Sales Channels. Any one
has a no for these? Like

No of direct & indirect resellers in Karachi?
Strength of Direct Sales & Telesales Teams?
Share of each channel in total sales?

Thanks in advance

all of the franchises i.e. indirect sales channel are selling the connections
2nd thing they have their own direct sales team comprising of around 20 people all master in their field [trust me they are real cream of sales in Mobilink...]
Telesales is not their concerns
So, 1st according to sales are direct sales 2nd indirect ones and last by own employees through refernces ....

Adding up, Mobilink Infinity is truly taking advantage of established
brand name of Mobilink GSM (having 32million users). Make Sense:) as
end of the day, they are making NUMBERS.
But still, lots of efforts are required to make full contribution to

Wireless is meant for mobility ? I am not to sure what is your point
here, but a LOT of wireless is fixed and nomadic in the world.
Starting from point to point till some staellite technologies......

Always remeber that if you are a power users, that doesn't mean all of
the consumer/market thinks your way. Power users are usually 3-5
percent of market size and business plans are formulated for the
bigger chunk

As techie you might like the nayatel network most but when you study
their business model you will see that how feasable it is in terms of
payback and roi

No one is here for charity :)

Thanks Faraz. But i called a couple of their franchises. The rep at
Saddar franchise told me that the connection could be arranged on a 1
day notice and he included 2k Installation cost in the tarriff which
is not there on their website.

2 or 3 other reps at other franchises got confused when they heard the
word Infinity and requested either to call back after an hour or call
the helpline.

I think the modus operandi is different

This is from the FAQ section on http://www.worldcall.net.pk/evdo.html
"
Q6. Will I be able to get full speed?
This depends opon how far you stay from Worldcall's CDMA Tower, either with EVDO network or CDMA1x. You will get good speeds if the tower is within 2-4kms.
