All,

I have been using the PTCL Broadband Internet for more than a year and
it worked perfect but unfortunately my modem started to blink RED
light which means the device is not working. I called the PTCL support
and they did send technical guy (though he was stupid) at home and
according to him the modem's warranty has expired and is faulty and
you would have to purchase a new modem from the market. Now I'm
confused as PTCL did not mention of giving away the modem or not
supporting the modem after one year.

Can any one share how to resolve this issue !!!

Thank you,

Well u said ur self that u had it for more then a year, and according to the terms and conditions that u sign (which normally we don't read completely) it becomes ur property after 12 months and what ever happens to it after that is ur problem. A portion of the monthly internet charges is kept as modem's rent by PTCL. Just think PTCL will never give away anything for FREE!!! will it ?? :) .. after all its PTCL ..

Alternate solution is apply for the disconnection of DSL service and return the modem & then again apply for the new connection. Process takes 8-10 days :)

Haroon sb,

when i got the inital agreement, it was mentioned that the modem would be handed over to the customer after a year. though i dont remember the clause in the agreement for supporting it.

from what i recall, out of the rs. 1200 a month we are charged for services, about 400 (or maybe 300?) is modem installment each month.

this actually brings a question which i've been pondering for quite sometime.. why do we still pay for modem installment AFTER the year is up?

anyone has any thoughts?

Can you get to its admin page? Assuming you use Windows, open a command
window and type

ipconfig /all | more

to find your default gateway. The web interface will be on that IP.
It's usually at

http://192.168.1.1/

or

http://192.168.0.1/

Most modems will let you login as 'admin' or 'root' (similar passwords).
Perhaps you can find some detailed status/reports to help you locate the
problem.

The modems they give out are of low quality (and cheap). The one I have
at my office remembers most of its settings on restart, but consistently
forgets the DMZ host. I bought a Linksys WAG200G a couple of years ago;
I see that Linksys's comparable product of that type is the WAG160N:

For service termination one has to return the modem in working condition ie atleast with a proper POST .

A few of my recent and personal experiences.....

1. I got an ISDN at my home in Sep'2000 and was using it till yesterday. I applied to PTCL to disconnect my ISDN this week and they were asking me to return the ISDN modem that they supplied me in Sep'2000 whereas I changed the ISDN modems twice in the past 9 years. Some how, they were convinced that they are asking something stupid.

2. I was a FUT customer of Infinity - Wimax. From August'09 they started issuing bills. I received the fist a bill and paid immediately. All of a sudden, on a week-end nigh in Ramada my Infinity stopped working. I called at 369 and was told that your connection has been suspended on non-payment, I told them that I've not received any bill yet, the call agent responded that your outstanding amount is Rs. 6,000. As I use a few other services as FUT, I was not bothered. I received a bill from Infinity 4 days after the suspension. I called and requested them to send me break-up of charges and since then no response. I don't want to hold anybody's payment, but am concern to know about the charges...may be FUT fee :)

3. I was also using Infinity - Wimax at my office besides other connections. On Monday this week, the Infinity stopped working. Launched a complain at 369, a guy visited yesterday and informed that the out-door cable needs to be replaced, a vendor (may be their Modem supplier) will come, change the cable and you pay him Rs. 4,500 cash for this.

So Infinity lost two connections with a bad taste :(

Now this really is a very much workable solution. Its a pity we are still LAKEER KAY FAQEER in terms of policies designed by the authorities and don't bother to look for any customize solutions.

The same case happened with me few months back when i called Worldcall to have a portion of my TV cable changed but the procedure would require approvals along with service charges. As per their own installer, i should have disconnected the connection and applied for a new connection (3-months payment which I am already using) and they would change the whole cable cable from pole to my television set free of cost!

Customized solution for different scenarios is really the voice of time specially keeping in view the strict competition in the market.

When I terminated my contract (due to house move), they actually let
me keep the modem because it had been more than a year and so it had
become customers property.
