Who are the 10 most influential personalities in the history of
Pakistan telecom (1947-2009)? Here are a few names (some with
incomplete/inaccurate info) - please share your thoughts. We will do a
count after a week or so and see who's most popular.

First chair of PTC -- Who was he?
Paktel CEO -- first cellular service provider?
Shahzada Alam -- PTA chair - 2002-2008 - for policy implementation
Naguib S of Mobilink
The guys over at Etisalat who approved the deal of Ptcl
Salman Ansari
Telenor management team
Chinese finance minister
TGP team :)

Count based on what?

There are many things to count when we want to label someone in the top ten bracket like their visibility, interaction with press, interaction with major foreign telecom companies (both operators and vendors), years of experience, achievements, whether they chair any global telecom event on regular basis etc.

If by count you mean poling through emails and counting whose name appears most, i don't think it will be justifiable.

I think it's imperative to mention Mian Mohammad Javed, who has headed PTC, NTC in early 90's and founded PTA as the first chairman.

If we took all the stakeholders in value chain of Telecom then we need to
add all the categories e.g.policy makers (including FBR), opertaors/implementors and regulators etc. and related fields like USF, R&D and Telecom Equipment Manufacturing etc.

Afzal,

This is not a scientific study or a stats based poll. I'm just curious
to see what our fellow TGP members think. To keep it simple I
mentioned overall influence. Of course its subjective and will cause
some discussion. But thats the point here :)

You may add Sultan-ul-Arfeen (keeping the period) and Mr. Baqai as well.

I'm not really sure who they were, but the ones who got the deregulation of telecom sector done, and who got the CPP implemented are by far the ones with the greatest impact on our telecom sector :)

anyone got their names?

My take is:
  • Internet Service Providers Domain: Lakhanis of Cybernet and the owners of then WOL - who had the guts to make the small ISPs fly big time shaking PTCL in their pyjamas by asking (and paying too) for 100s of PRIs and STM1s of capacities (these might sound nothing today but ask anyone of that era and you will see what I mean) ushering the 'Data' era in those early times.
  • Regulatory Domain: Awais Leghari, Policy Writers (Jamshed Masood sb et al) & Shahzada Alam of PTA - the policy might be copied from all over the world but the together, these three did a synchronized constructive waveform that we all now know as the good history of Pakistan Telecoms
  • Cellular Domain: The then Mobilink's team that (albeit alleged unauthorized loan-based fund diversion) spread the '0300' GSM virus in the nascent days of cellular industry
  • Community Domain: Salman Ansari, Sanaullah Bhutta and Wahaj-us-Siraj who kept on putting the top most agenda item in the limelight of national discussions in the telecoms domain

I believe Mr. Faisal of Fascom has also contributed a lot. Almost in the era of DigiCom (The pioneers of live Internet), Fascom was quite able to provide good quality Internet and sustained for a long time. If I am not wrong, they were charging around Rs. 300/- per hr for a speed of 2.4 or 14.4 in corporate sector. Apart from Internet, they got some very good deals in VSATs (satellite) as well.

However, now they are no more active in the market.

i think we also need to mention Dr. Atta ur Rehman in this list. I think he was the one who introduce Caller Party Pay (CPP) mechanism and he also pushed PTCL to launch its mobile company (Ufone). I think introduction of CPP and launch of Ufone completely changed the dynamics of the industry.

I think Ex-President Pervez Musharraf was the person behind the launch of full fledge Telcom Pakistan. He posted Shahzada Alam at PTA, Ovais Leghari as  Telco Minister and  Dr Ata-ur Rehman  at  MOST (Ministry of Science and Technology). Before his era it was all about  Dialup internet which was  successfully lead by CYBERNET and SUPERNET  and FASCOM.\\\

No personal favor to Pervez Musharraf, i am just mentioning the truth and  one more thing.. he was the person behind  TV Channel license and freedom to the electronic media. This results huge job opportunities for the  VSAT, ISP, Software guys.

How about the following for making it to such significant positions of
influence:

1. Mushtaq Bhatti, the one who keeps impressing us by doing nothing
and yet getting rewarded every other month and year

2. Mohammed Yaseen, the director who became member and then one night
became chairman...gave all his admin powers to cabinet division and is
now isolated by his members

3. Khawar Siddique Khokhar, the incumbent member technical who along
with member finance is planning a coup against the chairman, pta

4. S. Nasrul Karim Ghaznavi, the longest serving member finance of pta
who has recently reduced salaries of pta employees and takes many
allowances illegaly

All occupying positions of influence yet making sure that nothing
happens in the telecom sector.

I know this won't go through the filter but at least someone will know
what's "happening" in the telecom sector these days.

AoA All,

I think we must also include the following

1. CEOs & CTOs of the pioneer companies under the domains of ISP/DSL/
LL/WLL/Telco/Software
2. Key persons behind ICT R&D fund
3. Key persons behind innovations (Technology, Services, Products) in
pakistan

Infact Its a nice discussion, and I hope the results will be compiled
with great care because it can be a historical document for our
generations to come.
