Hello,

I will be travelling to Pakistan in a few weeks and was wondering if
anybody can recommend a good cellular data service. I plan to use
this service to tether my laptop to check email etc and occasionally
go to a website. I briefly looked at Telelnor and Zong website. Some
of these operators are very focused on voice plans and hide away the
details of the data plans on some deep dark corner.

From what I have been able to gather so far, Zong offers a 4GB package
for Rs. 400. This is more than plenty for me. However it is not
clear to me if Zong offers edge in most areas of Pakistan. I get the
impression that Telenor offers pretty good edge coverage nationwide.
However their data plan for prepaid customers does not compare well at
Rs. 15/MB.

Ufone also seems to have a good plan at Rs. 500/1.5GB. However I am
unsure of their EDGE coverage throughout Pakistan.

Unfortunately I will not be staying in one place for long but will be
travelling all over the place. So I am looking for a service provider
that has good nationwide EDGE coverage and does not charge per MB to
prepaid customers.

Thanks.

Just go for Telenor. Its Edge service is available at places where other providers don't even offer basic voice services. I have recently done a lot of work in flood affected areas (from remote areas beyond Skardu to AJK to Interior Sindh) and fond Telenor's service to be extremely reliable. Note: I do not work for Telenor. :-).

One significant issue with a couple of operators is that their BB and Edge services only works in large metropolitan areas.

Other then Peshawar, I have been 'HAPPY' with PTCL EVDO,
http://ptcl.com.pk/contentb.php?NID=199 (pay as you use) PRE-Paid USB modem.
It supports Gtalk, Skype, Yahoo chat almost everywhere from Gawader to
Attock., lowest of the speed I got so far is 512 which is fair enough when
mail downloading is concern in places like where no other service is
working.

Hello,

Thanks.

Out of all GSM operators in Pakistan, which has the most bandwidth for
IP Transit?

Surprise! It is ZONG!!.

I've used Mobilink, Telenor and Zong for connecting to the internet.
So far Zong results have been the best with Telenor coming in at a
close second. A Zong internet connection beats PTCL's circuit
swtiched dialup internet connection every single time.

If you will be stationed in Major cities, then zong should be just
fine (more bang for the buck) :-). If you are concerned about the
coverage, then Telenor should be at a slight advantage.

You cannot compare GPRS/EDGE with EVDO since EVDO is way more
expensive.
