These statistics are not correct and very misleading indeed. We’ve done detailed traffic analysis today and tried various models on Google Trends and Google Insights. Pornographic webs sites hardly count for any traffic in forty top most accessed sites from Pakistan.

Just to give you one examples, go to http://www.google.com/insights/search/# and put the key words  - fiber optics - set the filters on right hand side of the search bar to - worldwide - and - last 12 months – and – all categories. You’d see Pakistan on the top! It’s amusing to Pakistanis being Number One on searching fiber optics. Quite honestly not many people know even the name of fiber optics outside scientific and tech community. You can still do so many other generic searches and see the results.

The bottom line is that these figures are not correct and grossly messed up. There’s some strange algorithm being carried out at Google and they’re not doing the geographical identification correctly based on the IP address. I’ve spoken to Badar Khushnood, Google’s Country Manager for Pakistan and even he didn’t have explanation for some of the questions that we had.

Foxnews can do any kind of story against Pakistan, that’s what they do for living. But sad part is local media carrying the same story (just cut and paste) in headlines without doing any homework or research. They have thus ridiculed their own homeland and countrymen in front of the whole world.

We’d be doing a press conference tomorrow, Friday, from the Internet Industry at 3:00 pm, our (Micronet/Nayatel) Blue Area Office (GD Arcade), Islamabad and would demonstrate all the facts in front of the media using Google Insight and Google Trends. Pakistan has enough of slander by the international community but we should be wise enough to broadcast our point of view with full force and justification.

Pakistan zindabad…..Wahaj us Siraj/ISPAK

Yes, Western media might have (mis)used this information to their purpose but the information is indeed correct.  Pakistan has been on the top for a while on a number of such searches.

Anyone can access these statistics through Google Trends. For example, here is a link to an explicit search mentioned in the article that puts Pakistan at the top in the region-wise list.

Nauman Faridi

Look at the title suggested by the champions of porn (infact they treat it as an Industry) ... Simply hilarious... Moreover, the article doesn't shows any link to so called the Google Statistics... Why .. ? ...The article shows no data that supports the big statements made by the writer.. so again to me its nothing but an loser's attempt to disgrace Islam and Pakistan. It is so disgusting to distort facts and like civilized western citizens, we denounce this.

No hard feelings but there is nothing to be amused about it rather the Internet community of the country should strongly condemn this at all platforms.

Here is an interesting story from Time.com.

http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/6gbgoS/newsfeed.time.com/2010/07/14/pakistans-peculiar-and-prolific-pornography-tastes//r:f

I wonder that with so little, weary, meager and really intermittent Internet access, and not very large number of Internet users, how could we achieve this award... Any ways, we won this ;)

Best wishes

Shahzad

Can't agree much with yor Wahaj Sb, it was a dissapointment to see the same 'FOX' news in our local newspapers. Google should come up with an explanation on these messed up algorithms and clarify the facts.

The press conference step is appreciated, would be looking forward to its outcome and point of views discussed.

Can we have some one from PTCL, Wateen and LDN give us an idea about the actual traffic mix? It's much more accurate than Google search algorithms.

I wasnt surprised when our media took the jump and published this idiotic story.

Its sad but the fact is, this is "masala" news, and our media deems anything but our own facts as authentic. One of the basics of journalism is to not rely on facts stated by others and investigate personally to do a fact check. Our media has failed to do this over and over again.

Fox News is just a neo conservative Republican funded news channel. Everybody knows that they have a bias favouring the political right wing and run their propaganda machine through their channel. I remember political figures like Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, John Edwards, Bill Richardson all boycotting and dropping out of Fox News sponsored or hosted debates. So who cares what they have to say? I urge my fellow Pakistanis to just ignore this "below the belt" so called research report by an organisation that has zero credibility all across the world.

Alexa.com a top ranking world site giving stats about web sites
mostly accessed from a country. No pornographic site comes even in top
forty list when you try to look for Pakistan, http://www.alexa.com/topsites/countries/PK.

It's shame that Government of Pakistan is sleeping on this incident,
no official version has yet come out. Embassy of Pakistan in
Washington DC also made no comments to Foxnews when they contacted
them. The story calls Pakistan as "Pornistan" and Foxnews just done a
vulgar talk show on this subject. Ministry of IT, PTA, Ministry of
Information, all paid from our (tax payers) money are busy in foreign
tours, meetings and flashing media projections. The public and civil
society has to stand up against this indifference of "public
servants".

Kind regards....Wahaj

I really appreciate Wahaj sahb's decision to hold a press conference as an effort to clear this misunderstanding.

Also, I think we should send our complaint/concerns to Google as well because it brings shame for them too. Google should give an explanation to this.

Once again, I appreciate such bold steps of coming forward and reply back to them who are trying to tarnish Pakistan's image. It gives us all encouragement as well.

Pakistan Zindabad from my side too! :)

We cant just ignore this report. What ever the credibility of this channel is they still have viewer ship all across the world and it does have affect on crowd's minds. These days they are brainwashing every one's minds and making our image look bad. In case you havent noticed a video has been released of Faisal Shahzad. Now i am not debating that he was or wasn't involved in the bombing attempt but the thing is that in the age of multimedia revolution we all know how these videos can be forged. Now the point being that they are making us look bad and we have to negate this by using our media and i think its our foreign ministry's duty to request explaination for these blunders.

Well can't say much on the google analytics tools however when an
analysis is done it should be carried out by keeping all sort of
traffic flows in mind and not only web or web (port 80) search.

Torrents, ptp traffic, pirated porn movies business - rapid share etc
are bigger than the web traffic itself when it comes to total traffic
flows toward any economy. Porn is still the biggest traffic over
internet.

80 percent of the internet users from pakistan are in between the age
of 18 and 27 I believe. And same is the case more or less in
gulf/middle east - where every one having an internet connection opt
for vpn connections to bypass the proxies . what's the biggest reason
? To access porn.

I don't know whether we are no. 1 or 100 but porn is a major
contributor in the in coming traffic.

Agreed. We can't just look at port 80 traffic. And going deeper may be opening up a whole can of worms. Copyrighted material, pirated software etc.

As for Google search results, they're probably accurate, but it's like saying my site ranks no.1 for "bald sheep from mars" or "yawning for beginners". Very few people are likely to search for those terms.

The article seems designed to provoke and generate controversy. That's what tabloids thrive on and Fox News is one of the biggest.

If you look at this http://www.google.com/insights/search/#q=sex%20&cmpt=q you get Pakistan at number 2 (after Vietnam at #1), under the "Regional Interest" heading if the setting is Region (ie country).

If you change Region to City, I would expect a few Pakistani cities to show up. In fact no Pakistani or even Vietnamese city shows up. New Delhi is actually #1 here.

The stats are inconsistent.

So what are you proposing? A media war with Fox News? We all know how that's gonna turn out! Our foreign ministry take up an issue over porn searches report? Please don't degrade the meaning of a foreign office by proposing that they highlight this issue like that of facbook. They will be the laughing stock of the world and rightly so. What purpose did a temporary block of facebook achieve except making us seem like emotional and sentimental? Why can't we be a tolerant nation that knows the truth about its own identity and have peace and comfort in that? Anyone who knows the true identity of our nation knows that this search report is false. Yes its a propaganda, yes its derogatory cause it meant for that purpose, but if we point fingers at this small issue then they will make 1000 such issues and promote it. Let's treat this issue exactly the way its meant to be treated. Let's not stoop to Fox News channel mentality and be Pakistanis instead!

Wahaj Bhaie,

Your effort to bring the case to attention is highly commendable.

I seriously believe that THOSE who matter or at positions to rasie voice
even know the meaning of PORN let alone how to check out meaning on a paper
dictionary.

We (as nation Pakistan) are already under radar for Degree Scams., any day
goes by when foreign schools will start to decline admissions in Post
Graduate curriculams,

We only can wince and cry at state of nepotism in our country,

Keep it up

We better give a try searching through google's insight the words
AT&T, PTCL, Etisalat, Indian Air, PIA etc. results would be eye
opening. Actually it is not about a nation's fault it is simply about
the words you put-in for google's insight and thats it. For example
just change the word sex with porn you will not find Pakistan
anywhere........ cheers !

Wahaj:

Did ISPAK issue a press release or can you have someone update us about the news conference and its outcome? More specifically, did Badar mention if Google will take steps to verify this (and hopefully post a resolution?).

No point waiting for the ministry and others to do anything; we all know what they are worth, and about their capabilities and intelligence levels... let's work out things on our own. Wahaj Sb always does some brilliant work, and let the rest also do our share. We need to get facts out to our media to fight against this propaganda. Let the media and civil society fight it out.

Why can't our media people interview Ann Paterson here and grill her of the wrong doings of their media and demand an apology. When their own society is emanating all the filth through their $10 Bn worth Adult industry in the world how can they mock others and call by their country by such derogatory names.

We don't have an option of sticing our heads in the ground and letting a free go at mocking at us.

Let's make efforts to join force between the civil society and the media to fight this out.

Regards,
Adnan

I totally agree with Wahaj sb, and we all need the same kind of
attitude towards all the misleading information being spread in the
western media about Pakistan and Islam. We must beleive in ourselves,
that we are not the "One" as depicted on the western media. We must do
proper home work, and logical research on all the information we get
through these sources before spreading it to the masses. The same kind
of wisdom is required in our Manual of Life "The Quran".

We are all with you Wahaj sb! May Allah(SWT) bless you with
everlasting Guidance, Happiness and Success.

Pakistan Zindabad!

Exactly a year before this issue surfaced, I had done thorough
analysis of the issue & put forward realistic solutions. [ Protecting
ourselves in Cyberspace ]

http://groups.google.com/group/telecom-grid-pakistan/browse_thread/thread/a0ea609dfed8df9b/5a7d337a3e157e19?lnk=gst&q=+Protecting+ourselves+in+Cyberspace+#5a7d337a3e157e19

Since no one heeded to it, this was bound to happen. I really wonder
why our nation is so slow in 'acting' upon suggestions & so quick in
'reacting' to western media.
Cyberspace doesnt only pose threats like porn, the threats &
widespread & realistic to our Pakistani community.
A few days ago, I had a discussion with a consultant & he said,
""Well Pakistan has a huge proportion on youth, almost 50% of
population is in the age boundary 18-40. Unless protected, this mass
workforce will either destroy, or end up doing slavery in western
countries".

This is the summary of threats posed to Pakistan in cyberspace.

Google officially denied the accuracy of its search trends that declared Pakistan as the top nation searching for illicit material on the internet, reported Dawn News.

In an email sent to dawn.com, Therese Lim of Google’ communications and Public Affairs Southeast Asia team said,

“We do our best to provide accurate data and to provide insights into broad search patterns, but the results for a given query, such as those reported in this story from Pakistan, may contain inaccuracies because the sample size is too small for the results to be statistically sound.”

Internet Service Provider Association of Pakistan has also declared statistics regarding pornography in Pakistan as flawed.

Earlier, ProPakistani had published a detailed report, incorporated by Google Data, to show that Pakistan isn’t even in top 10 countries for porn search, leave alone the top slot.

Last week FoxNews had produced a report alleging Pakistan to be number one nation for porn search.
