I and TM were talking the other day, the dream of getting a dsl connection in Pakistan for sub
300 rs.

Yesterday I saw an add on AXN channel for BSNL now giving 2mbps internet connection for
250 rs a month.

I hope we get to that point in Pakistan soon also.

Usually they play over overbooking ratio - maybe that 2 MBps is shared with 100 Users.

I would not mind having a 100mbps shared with a million people, that is what internet actually
is.

its a huge network of many connected people.

Actually in my opinion is a little more complex than this *wink*

a 2mbps connection could become a 128 K or a less than that ( when you start using it ) so you will still end up paying lets say 350 Rs for a 64/128 sort of access. its the usability which you look when you get the connection, not just the name of the product (i-e 350 = 2 mbps)

my 2 cents

Oversubscription yes...but Economy of Scale...effects positively on CAPEX and related benefits to end user.

FLAG etc etc Internet rate is yet another important factor

Like for WiMAX, vendors are specifically customizing Outdoor CPE form factor for addressing cost and network design....for a huge Indian market......... no one offered similar approach for WiMAX operators in Pakistan...

Contention Ratio would be the key factor (as well) !

As the number of subscribers grow the contention ratio get better & better as long as you are investing back with the required pace.

I remember during Cybernet days, we used to leverage on our Corporate customers to do competetive pricing for the consumers. Even today there's a huge opportunity and responsibility on the large players to ensure there's a continous demand for the services & that's only possible once they have a focus on helping the market size expand / increase hence increasing the demand !! That helps everyone !
Unless the market size increases, everyone would loose !

BSNL's case is very interesting, they have played a key role in increasing the market size at India - that's one of the reasons you see aggressive price plans! Their contention ratios went better & better as the number of subscribers increased over their network & in addition to that they got other High Revenue generating customers to keep them going with their agressive strategy!!

My 2 Cents !

Rehan, if I understand correctly, you would be happy with a 128 bytes/sec
connection? (100 mbps shared with 1 million?).

W.r.t BSNL, did you check out their plans by any chance?

The starter pack for 250 is 256 kbps (upto 2mb which I believe is burstable
capacity). Also, they offer 1 GB up and down limit!!!! With 90 paisa's per
MB afterwards.

They also have a Rs. 125 package, with a 150 MB per month cap.

For a decent 512 (unlimited connection), they charge Rs. 1350 a month, while
volume based 512 is 1800 with 10 gb cap.

All these connections do not include modem charge (which we get for free)
between 60 to 90 a month.

So as far as that goes, we're in a much better boat, don't you think?

True, Mansoor!

I was surprised (read shocked) to read that BSNL is offering 2Mbps for just 250 bucks!
It isn't what everyone was assuming; and perhaps we were under estimating Pakistani broadband market!

1 GB volume cap - that's gonna exhaust within a few days once you unleash all your p2p applications apart from simple webs surfing.

Anyways, I believe the current broadband rates here in PK are OK - it's the service & uptime that I'm more concerned towards. Also, currently all broadband providers are not diving below 1000 bucks and are instead doubling the provided downlink (e.g. 128 got 256, 256 to 512).

IMHO, they should also introduce sub 128k packages, say 64k, for Rs.300 or 500 - this connection would be most attractive & pocket-friendly to those people (students, housewives, low-earning professionals, etc) who can't afford a 1000-rupee killer on their monthly budget and yet want something better than a dialup! Ofcourse this can't be classified as a 'broadband' but would be better in service and always connected!

my 2 aana's!
