Dear All,

I would like to inform you about PTCL's curb on students' broadband
packages by limiting them to avail only bandwidth of 1mbps on
discounted rates. Students are now being barred from getting 2 and
4mbps on student rates starting February. This is how a national
corporation works in national interest in this information age.

Fyi their website continue to say that they are selling 2&4mbps
connections to students.

Guys do something!

 I dont see anything wrong with this. Many people have become students just to avail that 30% discount. PTCL has a right to earn money against their services. 1mbps is a good enough connection for students I guess. If students want to do facebook, youtube all day long then thats a different thing. But the concept is to facilitate them in their studies.

@ sheikh usman... i dont agree with you... first of all ptcl doesnt care about students, this organization only cares about money. they wanted customers so they introduced this package and believe me they gave student package to people without even verifying their status from the uni now that they have ample customers they are kicking out the student package customers

Just got the info that student discounts will remain valid till Feb 28th...

Telecom Act says any telco can withdraw any service any time, if informed 30 days in advance.

So let's not complain PTCL's move, however, it can cost the company some loyal customers.

@Saad, As per my experience there's a process whch takes some time when you apply for the student visa. They verify it from your university's registrar and only then issue you a 30% discount otherwise everyone would turn up and call himself/herself a student. But if there are some cases in which it was not verified, it must have been a neglection on part of appropriate authorities and should be checked. However, when you say it doesn't care about students, it only cares about money - well they are out there to earn money. Of course its not a welfare organization. Its a commercial organization which wanted to broaden its customer base and for that they offered an incentive for students. But I dont know why a student would require a connection above 1mbps.

Seriously, though, as Usman and others have pointed out, PTCL is likely
under no (legal) obligation to subsidize 2/4 mbit connections.

If one is a student why would he need b/w more than 1 Mbps...Most of the students having 2 Mbps or 4Mbps would only be watching and downloading movies and playing online games....and honestly....if a student needs broadband...even 512 kbps is quite fast...its all about needs....and yes   No offence to students ....its just what it is

Just look at the inflation rate where cheeni & petrol (etc) prices are
raising like anything. Despite of these fact, internet pricing are
going down drastically. Secondly, i agree that why students need more
than 1Mbps for their educaton purpose even 256kbps is good enough to
serve. We all have seen the history of 1Mbps in thousands of rupess
and now its in just few hundreds with much reliable medium. i think
"hum thanday doodh ko phonkein martay hien" :)
But this is fact.

One key issue here is that when you have a 1 Mbit/sec DSL link, you're
still sharing bandwidth with a few other DSL users. What's the
contention ratio for PTCL DSL these days? I know that I rarely get
more than half of my 2 Mbit/sec link most of the time.
