Subject: Easy Paisa

http://www.easypaisa.com.pk/

I heard from someone about the launch of Easy Paisa by Telenor.

I got extremely excited, that I wanted to go for the launch, but when I just saw the
web site on what it does.

I am very very very disappointed.

Imagine when you can pay for your coke, your samoosa, your amrood, and your
mango's via Mobile phone, just by sending an sms.

The telecoms have this facility, YET they do not want to promote it, and they are
NOT promoting this concept of paying via sms and mobile credit.

Telecom Marketing People, WAKE UP, start a campaign showing a Paan wala
accepting Mobile credit as payment, which he can then re-use to pay for stuff that he
wants.

Find you charge 5% let the customer descide if he wants to pay the 5% service fee
and 15% tax , but TEACH him to use his mobile balance to pay for service, and
WHY NOT ?

I hope they will do this soon enough and make money for themselves, and for others.

AGREED!
I was too disappointed to see, one must go out side.. and cant do it from
home or cell. its 2009 and we are still making On Counter deals..

I was expecting WEB, WAP or SMS transaction.. just like many banks already
doing and they do it for FREE!

LoL! We are privileged people living in cities and towns having cell phones
AND computers. Many of us enjoy broadband connectivity at our homes and
offices.

But we must realize that the service primarily focuses on Pakistan's rural
majority and the 'un-banked' people who are a vast majority. Pakistan only
has 25 million bank accounts with over 90 million mobile subscribers.

So for someone who does'nt even have a bank account, going to any easy-paisa
agent, creating a virtual account and being able to transact is a big
development indeed.

I believe this is an optimistic moment for all of us in Pakistan.

I would also like you to read my blog post which I wrote before the official
launch:

Agreed with Faisal Naik. At the launch, I got a chance to talk to the telenor team on this. They assured of their plans to go beyond just bill payments.

So like Ammar Faheem has said "for someone who does'nt even have a bank account, going to any
easy-paisa agent, creating a virtual account and being able to transact
is a big development indeed". We must appriciate such a step and look forward on how the branchless banking paradigm unviels and how it will cater the unbanked population.

Considering there is MCB Mobile Banking, Mobilink Genie, UBL Orion, Amaana
etc; As a first step, EasyPaisa is *MUCH* better done than any of these
products/services. Unlike Genie, Orion, MCB etc EP is open for all; not for
limited customers. Right now, the focus is on consumer to business
transactions which is a safe place to start. Also, there are only 5-6 listed
'businesses' (LESCO etc). But if these guys are smart (and I really hope
they are), they will:

   1. Open up EasyPaisa for any vendor
   2. Allow consumer-consumer transactions

If you are a business and you get yourself listed as a business with
EasyPaisa, consumers acorss Pakistan should now be able to pay for your
services. I don't see any reason why Telenor would not allow your business
to be listed there but once you are; this does open up a wide door for you.

The success of this service will very much depend upon the number of
businesses selling services on EP. I do hope that Telenor opens it for all
businesses.

*This is the strategy:

Get people used to M-Commerce through an 'Open Consumer System' since there
is no other way to educate the Pakistani public and once they start
interacting they will ultimately come to know the crux of this whole effort.
A general consumer needs a 'hands-on' experience at such a mass level value
added service being introduced in the country and since most of our
population does not believe in 'subscription' hence this is the only way
they will start knowing about alternative way of commerce. Some one had to
take this initiative. Last year I was encouraging another operator on the
similar lines and also had sent them brochures for various VAS Kiosks to
start the awareness campaigning in order for the public to start using the
value added services, however they seemed null about this whole thing, but
in the end I'm happy that at least someone kicked off a similar Idea! for
our people.

There are various flaws in EP's tv commercial and newspaper ads, they left
number of gaps which could turn into threats if competitor reacts
proactively, but that is a total separate debate and maybe not fit for this
distribution list. Product and Concept as far as these both things go and
the road taken to infiltrate into the consumers  - no doubt, outclass. This
is a good utilization of a banking unit.

EP is going to evolve into a much bigger category of things - they are day
and night in consultation with various stakeholders to improve this. That's
the way you win when you bring in more heads and generate 1000 ideas instead
of sitting in a confined environment and developing products. 3 years ago I
had introduced a P&G model to even some P&G people which they weren't aware
of, of how to link your community, consumers and competitors to develop a
global-class product.

How would a soap brand market their product into a non-hand washing segment?
They will first bring the consumer to the water as a first step and then
introduce that the soap is a vital part of cleaning yourself. The segments
not exposed to water won't be able know the importance of a Soap and the
segments not exposed to a Soap won't be able to signify the importance of a
Branded Soap.

You need to adopt a strategy to bring in a change inside the market.

Thanks.**

As daft as this may sound, turn off your router, plug out the
telephone wire from the modem, then reboot. Wait a while. Can you
access the interface?

If so, try "refreshing" the settings. For copper, the settins are
0/103 (for those VPI and VCI settings). On Optic, it's 8/81 (or 82 -
can't remember).

You'll need your DSL username and password - call up 1218 and ask for
the supervisor, or a technical support officer if the frontline CSRs
can't help (which is a 90% probability).

Note that it can be isolated to your exchanges as well.
