A couple of comments:

1. When I first decided to try RoR I setup xampp then installed Ruby inside of it.  I was up in running in 5 minutes with a mysql database.  This is on Win 7 x64.

    - I use UltraEdit for my "ide" It costs money but I've found that good tools are worth spending some money on.  It's the same reason I send money to open source projects when I find something particularly useful.

    - I also tried SqlLite3, it worked just fine

2. The quasi-religious arguments about platform are exactly that.  I personally find this to be one of the most annoying things about life in general and working with engineers/scientists specifically.  If you don't want to play in the other person's sandbox then don't, but don't expect them to come and play in yours.  Destructive zealotry is unattractive in any group and really serves to tighten up the base and divide rather than create converts.

3. I would be happy to donate some money towards purchasing TV.rb memory sticks for the educational cause that we can preload with whatever...

4. How do we donate towards food at meetings?
