Subject: starting to blog and ICT ideas for the classroom

Hey everyone,

Just to let you know that I have written a couple of blog posts about
blogging - what is is and why would would do it. I wrote them for this
list mainly (so if you are already well entrenched in the world of the
blog, you probably don't need to read them!).

3 Series on Blogging: A bl-what? + Q1: What is a blog?
<http://www.technolote.com/?p=176>
Q2: Why would I use blogs? <http://www.technolote.com/?p=177>
(coming tomorrow) Q3: How would I use them and how do I get started?

Also, look out over the next couple of weeks for:
3 Series on Blogging: Getting into the Groove
3 Series on Blogging: Building a Community Around Your Blog

QUESTION -

What is one idea you have for using technology in your LOTE classroom
this year?
Reply to the list so everyone can see your answer and we can share all
the good ideas!

One of my ideas for this year -

    * I'm hoping to get 2 collaborative projects started that will
involve video conferencing with a class in NZ and one in China. My
gr 4/5 class will teach the NZ students some Chinese, and maybe
the Gr 6 class (haven't decided yet) will work with the class in
      China on some language exchange.

A useful website: Media Converter <http://www.mediaconverter.org/> -
lets you download videos from You Tube and convert them into a format
you can take to school

Hope all is well!
Jess

Hi Jess hope you got my other email about chinese. I'm not a techno
head and often doing anything at our school involving ICT usually
results in a bad experience, tech staff and IT teacher don't
communicate that well - Ive finally had the opportunity to get my
classes into a computer room on a regualr basis but only as a result
of us gaining a new computer lab - my classes are relgated to the old
lab which has its problems - all the PC's don't work, problems with
networking - enough whinging  - recently went to a conference and one
of the presenters was from languages online - game making - so in term
2 i'm taking the plunge and will have my classes attempt tp make their
own Indonesian games using the languages on line templates - there's
German, Italian, and japanese but unfortunately no chines at this
stage. I've also finally purchased an Ipod - which has been an
excellent way to store all my Indonesian listening texts and along
with trusty ipod speakers a much more managable way to lugg all my
stuff to various classes around - i'm nearly ready to get rid of the
'ghetto blaster'. Portable recorders - where do you get them?? Cheers
tony

Hi Jess
It was great to meet you at the PSP conference and to now have access
to this site with all its ideas is fantastic. The Community Languaes
Schools Program in NSW has developed a jeopardy game in response to a
request from a high school for some activities to be used for Harmony
Day. We thought we could kill trwo birds with one stone and also use
it as a promotion for 2008 International Year of Languages. It's
designed for use with students who aren't currently studying languages
as well as for those who are. It's in pwerpoint format and I'd love to
sahre a copy but not sure how to attach it. Could you let me know how
I can do this please.
Regards
Kris

Subject: How to add files to technoLOTE conversations

Hi everyone!

To answer Kris's question about attaching files -

Generally speaking, don't attach files to emails that go out to the
group. Instead, go to the technoLOTE email list site:
http://groups.google.com/group/technolote

and add files there. You'll find the files section in the bottom half of
the page. That's better than everyone havin to download attachments from
emails. once you have uploaded your file there, send an email to the
group to let us know what it is and that you've put it there.

If you're having trouble with that you can alwayd email me off-list,
send me the file and I'll do it for you, or help you through it anyway.

Here is a great website that supports IYL 2008
<http://donosborn.org/iyl/index.php/Main/HomePage>. It's a wiki site
with lots of links to other sites, blogs, resources, ideas etc.

Jess
